Howard Greenwald, Ph.D. is Professor, School of Policy, Planning, and Development, University of Southern California and Clinical Professor, Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Washington. Professor Greenwald’s academic honors include National Woodrow Wilson Fellow; Special Honors, Committee on General Studies in the Social Sciences, University of Chicago; Special Career Fellow, University of California, Berkeley; and Dissertation Fellow, Manpower Administration, United States Department of Labor. His research interests include Organizational Behavior and Theory, Public Opinion, Survey Design and Analysis, and Program Evaluation. He has served as director of USC's Health Services Administration Program, chairman of the Western Network for Education in Health Administration, director of the USC W.K. Kellogg Hispanic Leadership Program, and member of the American Society for Public Administration’s (ASPA) executive board in Sacramento, the capital of California. He consults widely for law enforcement agencies, health care providers, foundations, and community groups. Solid Book - Missing details... Better material online for free.

I have both the Gunsmithing - The AR-15 Vol 1 & 2 and truly enjoyed the books. However, for someone who is serious about building out an AR or working with them, this book is truly missing details. Yes it breaks down each system methodically and talks about dimensions, issues, historical changes, etc, but basic things like building a lower - not there. I found better material online (for free) than I did in this book. In fact, a recent lower build I had and issue I scoured both Vol 1 & 2 about and found nothing about it - and in 5 secs of googling I found all the details of how to.

If you just like Sweeny, want a good book about the history and changes in the AR subsystems, or want this book as a reference, spend the money. But if you are seriously building ARs, you will find this woofully lacking.

I purchased both volumes 1 and 2. Volume 2 is almost a complete repeat of Volume 1 with little to no additional information. There are vast sections of this book that are word for word out of Volume 1. There are other better books with more details on building, gunsmithing and maintenance of AR's.

The book is not very good. I would not quantify this as a gunsmithing book. I would require a much more detailed descriptions to actually do gunsmithing. Read it yourself and see.

These lecture notes comprise a three-semester graduate course in quantum mechanics at the University of Illinois. In retrospect these lecture notes seemed sufficiently interesting to warrant their publication in this format. The notes, presented here in slightly revised form, consitutute a self-contained course in quantum mechanics from first principles to elementary and relativistic one-particle mechanics. Prerequisite to reading these notes is some familiarity with elementary quantum mechanics, at least at the undergraduate level. Preferably the reader should already have met the uncertainty principle and the concept of a wave function. Prerequisites also include sufficient acquaintance with complex cariables to be able to do simple contour integrals and to understand words such as "poles" and "branch cuts." An elementary knowledge of Fourier transforms and series is necessary. I also assume an awareness of classical electrodynamics.

About the Author
Gordon Baym has remained at Illinois since his arrival; a frequent visitor to Nordita and the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, he has also been a visiting professor at the Universities in Tokyo, Kyoto and Nagorya. His principal research interests have been in the physics of condensed matter in systems ranging from liquid helium to neutron stars and high energy nuclear collisions. He is also the author of Lectures in Quantum Mechanics. Leo P. Kadanoff left Urbana for Brown University in 1969 and thereafter joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1978, where he is presently the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Distinguished Service Professor of Physics. After his early research in Green’s functions, he returned to study of critical phenomena near phase transitions, and then toward models of urban growth; his research is now aimed at turbulence and chaos in many-particle systems. For his work is critical phenomena, he received the Buckley prize of the American Physical Society, the Wolf Foundation award, and the Elliot Cresson medal of the Franklin Institute.

Good companion text with many useful insights--especially for those going onto study quantum field theory

This book grew out of Gordon Baym's Quantum Mechanics lectures at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the late 1960's. As such, it is really more suitable as a companion text rather than as a primary text. That said, I found that Baym provides a degree of physical intuition that is not found in the standard texts. I especially like Baym's discussion of creation and annihilation operators as well as Fermi's Golden Rule. Baym also provides a good treatment of the Klein Gordon and Dirac equations, the relativistic analogues of the Schrodinger equation for Bosons and Fermions. In general, Baym seems to have the intention of supplying the reader with the necessary preparation for the study of quantum field theory--an approach understandable in light of the fact that Julian Schwinger (one of the pioneers of quantum field theory and co-winner of the 1965 Noble Prize and physics for quantum electrodynamics along with Feynman and Tomonaga) was Baym's Ph.D. adviser.

Emblematic of this book is its discussion of the topic "Angular Momentum and The Harmonic Oscillator" (pp.380-386) within Chapter 17 which covers "Rotations and Tensor Operators." Based on a 1952 Atomic Energy Commission (What the Department of Energy used to be called) report by Julian Schwinger, angular momentum is modeled as two harmonic oscillators, each corresponding to its own creation and annihilation operator which moves the value of each oscillator up or down by a spin 1/2 "quantum". The total number of spin quanta shared by the two oscillators is seen to correspond to the angular momentum quantum number j. The difference between the number of spin quanta in each oscillator then corresponds to the quantum number m. Of course there are various commutation relations between the operators and before you know it, you have a clever way of calculating rotation matrix elements. There is even an amusing post-script that a scheme involving three harmonic oscillators corresponding to "quarks" can be used to generate the SU(3) symmetries of strongly interacting particles. Back when Baym first penned this textbook he observed that "It is an open question whether the quarks are real particle or not".

original and complete

I had baym when i was an undergrad ambitiously taking a grad class, so I can understand how to the novice this book can be intimidating: it is on the level of sakurai.

That being said, it is uncommonly complete and it has original presentations of material which is otherwise identical from text to text. For example the schrodinger equation in one place is derived as a hopping-problem in the continuum limit and he has a chapter on cooper-pairs which to my knowledge appears in no other intro QM book.

QM should probably be learned from a variety of sources because, just as there is wave mechanics and lots of special functions there is also powerful symmetry methods and algebraic techniques.

were I to recommend a set to study from I'd probably pick baym, shankar or sakurai, and landau.

A simple reference for a complex subject

This book exposes the essential Quantum Mechanical topics in a non-traditional order, and explores more advaced subjects as well, without losing clarity. The notation is easier to follow than most graduate level text books. Particularly good chapters are those concerning to Quantization of Radiation and Second Quantization.

great installment

I just finished Incredibly Alice, the latest installment in the Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor.

Oh, Alice, I already miss you. This book was back to being the series that I remember and love. The last couple of books did have something lacking. I didn't want to admit that, even to myself, for fear that I had simply outgrown Alice. But this one, oh, I remembered all of the things I deeply love about these characters, this ongoing story.

And Patrick... There's a reason he was my biggest crush for my entire preteen years. In the previous few books he'd been very distracted - and rightfully so - with college and everything that goes with it. He wasn't neglectful of Alice, per se, but he wasn't the thoughtful, supportive guy that I fell in love with. Patrick in this installment has returned to his confident, reliable self.

And yet, at the heart of this story will always be Alice and her family, and Alice and her best friends. Phyllis definitely went back to the roots of the series for this book, and it was like coming home.

I definitely believe that if you haven't followed Alice since her elementary school years that you will not care about this book or the characters. You simply have to have had the development that comes over the previous 20 or so books.

If you loved the earlier Alice books, you will love this one, too.

Incredibly Disappointing

Like many Alice fans, I grew up with the series. And like many fans, I was eagerly anticipating this book. However, as I made my way through it, I felt increasingly let down. Though well-written, so much of what made the series unique and endearing was missing (after the last few books, some would say long gone.)

Where to begin? Some of the funniest, most touching, and most memorable moments in the series were her conversations with Dad and Lester over shared meals. I understand that as Alice comes into her own, her family will take on a less involved role, but her dad, who was always such a major presence in the book with his gentle wisdom and wry humor, was pushed right to the margins. There is a touching scene in the beginning with stepmother she wanted so much, but then she fades into the background. Her interactions with Lester, which in previous books were laugh-out-loud funny, fall completely flat; it doesn't even sound like Lester. Perhaps the most striking absence is that of her mother. Alice's longing for her mother is so poignant in earlier books, but in this one I don't think she's mentioned more than once or twice until the very end, in a scene that makes her absence all the more noticeable. It is unbelievable that she would barely think of the mother she missed so much during such an important and emotional time in her life.

Her interactions with friends, who play a major role in this book, are equally disappointing. Pamela, Elizabeth, Gwen and the rest lack their unique voices and the conversations lack originality and humor. They really could be anybody. A lot of space is given to once marginal characters like Justin and Jill. It is hard to care about these characters and yet they are involved in a major storyline.

Perhaps most disappointing of all is Alice herself. This book, like the last five or so, lacks the frank, funny, unique voice of Alice McKinley. Of course she has matured, but it seems something was lost along the way. The narrator of this book is so ordinary that it could be any seventeen-year-old girl. What's more is that we never really see inside her head or her heart much. So much of the book just describes things that happen, not just to her but to other people. And since when did Alice become so shallow? There are so many descriptions of what people looked like and what they wore. And she just graduated high school and all she and her friends are thinking about is meeting hot guys? That was a disappointing ending if I ever read one. There is a very brief reference to her spiritual beliefs, but these are never explored in this book. Nor is much of any subject with any depth. So many scenes and conversations just felt trivial.

Fans of the series may want to read this just to see what happens, but don't expect much.

Great new Alice title!

I was SO PSYCHED to finally get my hands on this book- I have been an Alice fan since elementary school... I think this is book #26 or something in the series, which chronicles Alice's journey through puberty and now preparing for college.

The Alice Series is one of the most banned series of all time (check out the ALA website for more info on banned books). It is number 2 on the 2000-2009 list (after Harry Potter) and number 14 on the 1990-1999 list for being sexually explicit and unsuited to age group. HOWEVER, I think it perfectly correlates with what children are thinking about and curious about at each age. For example, I would not give a 10 year old the high school books, but I would give a 10 year old the books from when Alice is 10. When I have daughters, I will make sure that these books are on their shelves!

Alice is unique in that she is smart but not bookish, occasionally very impulsive while also developing a strong sense of responsibility, and above all, she thinks and feels very deeply about things. When this book opens, Alice is in the second semester of her senior year. During this book she decides where to go to college, attends the prom, and prepares for graduation. Alice branches out with a new project, Lester (her older brother) gets a crazy roommate, Jill's mysterious "plan" to snag Justin is played out, and the girls apply to work on a cruise ship for the summer! I expect that this book will be less controversial than others because the mild sexual content/discussion is "more appropriate" for a high school senior.

Personally, I really enjoyed this book, but if you have never read an Alice book before, don't start with this one! Start with the first book (Starting with Alice) and work your way on up. Part of the pleasure of this series is seeing how the characters change as they grow up, and it won't be as meaningful to read about Alice's current friendship with Patrick if you haven't read Alice Alone, for example.

Zilioli relates Protagoras' relativism with modern forms of relativism, in particular the 'robust relativism' of Joseph Margolis, gives an integrated account both of the perceptual relativism examined in Plato's Theaetetus and the ethical or social relativism presented in the first part of Plato's Protagoras and offers an integrated and positive analysis of Protagoras' thought, rather than focusing on ancient criticisms and responses to his thought. Animal Crossing: New Leaf's Official "Guide"

Animal Crossing: New Leaf is Nintendo's newest edition into their Animal Crossing Franchise. Unlike some of the guides that have been released in the past for the Animal Crossing series, it would seem that this particular Prima guide has fallen flat, and to be honest I've never been more disappointed by a guide purchase in recent memory. That being said, the guide isn't a complete waste of your money, but if you're expecting it to contain all of the information that you would expect a guide for Animal Crossing to include, you will be disappointed.

Pros:

- If you have never played the franchise before, the early parts of the guide will make your re-adjustment to the Animal Crossing gameplay and lifestyle MUCH easier. They will detail all of the tricks of the trade with the various tools you are given to earn bells with and how to eventually get upgraded versions of those tools.

- The guide includes a month-by-month calendar of what wildlife is available, so this ensures that you always can progress with your fish and bug collection without having to resort to 'time-traveling'.

- The guide includes a complete catalog of items in the game with checkboxes so you and the other players in the house can mark your progress. (Ex: Checkboxes are labeled P1, P2, P3, P4 for the 4 villagers allowed in one town.)

- You will learn tips such as being able to figure out which paintings are 'false' when the fox, Redd, comes to your town.

- I'm indifferent about this, but an e-version of the guide is available. It's not formatted very well for the e-format, but if you are unable to use the book you will have it available online.

Cons:

- The most outrageous thing I found myself getting frustrated over with this guide is how the guide itself did not seem to even be properly updated or modified to the final version of the game. If you're looking for the actual prices of fish, bugs, and similar things that can be sold in the game you will be VERY disappointed. The e-version of the guide will "warn" you that the fish will only be able to be sold for a 1/4th of their value that the guide considers the item has. For a guide that is cataloging crucial information such as this, it is absolutely unacceptable that the information isn't just made apparent of what the actual re-tail cost for items are.

- The guide details your neighbor's species and things such as their catch phrases, their birthdays, and their favorite activities, but the guide itself does not actually show you pictures of each and every single villager. It would be rather hard to find a way to get a picture for every single villager in the game of animal crossing, but it is something you would expect out of a guide for a game when you can generally never expect to see most of these characters ingame, it should be a resource of what some other players may have gotten, or even what you can hope for.

- The guide is too vague sometimes about how to unlock certain things in the game. The Animal Crossing series isn't a series that is recommended to many children that are just learning how to read, or are still struggling with reading due to the amount of conversations that occur during the game, but sometimes the guide is vague enough to cause confusion even in the most seasoned of Animal Crossing players.

All and all, I was expecting more from this strategy guide for the game, but if you're hoping for a resource to serve as a checklist for items available in the game, you'll find it more than suitable.

Terrible As a Guide/Decent as a Catalog Checklist

This guide is incredibly unhelpful when it comes to actual information pertaining to features/content of the game - it's incredibly vague, often spouts misinformation, really disorganized (items in no logical order forcing you to use the index for just about everything), and is missing a lot of content that I feel should have been included (i.e. it informs you that you can get balloons and pinwheels from the street pass feature... but completely neglects to inform you about the ice cream, tweeter and bubble wand you can also get from the same action. Another example is that this book completely neglects to inform you about the value of getting your fortune read by Katrina and what her reading entails with regards to good luck/bad luck... like a prediction of good luck in love means that you will increase the rate at which you become friends with villagers of the opposite sex. Another is valuing the "moon" item at 320 bells but it's actually 32,000 bells). It doesn't have ANY pictures for the villagers by name nor does it list their personality types.

I've honestly resorted to simply using this guide to catalog the items I've purchased and going onto free wikipedias or the animal crossing subreddits for ACTUAL information (like how many bells I have to spend to unlock the next shop or what exact dates certain fish or bugs are available as this is another area where the guide is incredibly vague or gives misinformation - one example being it lists the Oarfish as being available 1% in all months when really the Oarfish is only available December-May)

If you want a tangible checklist with pictures, this book functions as that just fine although it is missing some items (especially the consumable stuff like ice cream as mentioned above)... if you want concrete information about the game itself, don't waste your time. You'll end up finding your answers online for free because this book will probably not have them.

Extremely disappointed that this is the only English guide available when Japan received a wonderful, in depth guide. I've gone ahead and spent some money on the Japanese guide anyway as it has great visual references that this guide lacks (like the recolors available for certain items via Cyrus in Retail) and I already know I will find the Japanese book I cannot read infinitely more useful than this misinformed, lackluster "guide" from Prima.

Some good features + some bad features = just okay

Animal Crossing is a game where keeping track of all the various items is very helpful, and the Prima guide to Animal Crossing Wild World was great, so I purchased this guide when I purchased New Leaf. There are some pros for this book and some cons, which for me balances out to this book being just okay.

Pros:
- Keeping track: This is the big kahuna of pros for me. I enjoy keeping track of what I've bought, caught, and earned because it helps me complete my collections and trade with other players. Additionally, the book is set up so items can be checked off for up to 4 characters, so you can use it for multiple characters and/or you can share it with a family member very easily.
- Calendar: The calendar section of the book is arranged nicely and serves as a great reference. Each month has a calendar with holidays and animal character birthdays noted, followed by a list of all the fish and insects available during that month. This helps me check to see if I've done and collected all things possible.
- Animal character information: The characteristics and preferences of each animal character is good to have so I can give them appropriate gifts and order items for their birthdays.
- Coffee information: It's really useful to have the charts of what types of coffee each animal prefers. Otherwise, it would take forever in the game to figure it out on my own.

Cons:
- Format: I don't really like the smaller, thicker format of this book compared to the larger, thinner book for Wild World because I can't leave this book open to a specific page for reference while playing.
- Not as much information as I'd like: There is very little actual gameplay information in the book, so I end up going online when I need it. Someone else already mentioned thonky.com, and I've found that site to be a great help in many areas.
- Unreliable prices: The prices in my book don't match up to the prices in the game, which doesn't really affect me in the game too much, but it seems that a game guide should have better accuracy in general.
- Layout: This is the big kahuna of cons for me. I prefer items to be listed alphabetically because that makes it SO much easier to find out quickly if I already have an item or not, or what groups something belongs to (style, set, etc.). I'm fine with the big categories being separated into their own sections, but within those categories the items are listed randomly. So when I want to see if I've checked off something, or what the characteristics are, I have to go to the index in the back and find it, then go back to the listed page and find it again. It's REALLY time-consuming to go through the catalog at the Nooks' store and check off what I have, or to try to check things off as I get them!

Overall, I'm glad I purchased this book. But I do hope that Prima improves their guide format for the next Animal Crossing game, otherwise I will probably skip buying it and stick to finding information online and printing out the online lists of items.
