A welcome addition to a magick library

This is a well organized and delightful reference book on the basic elements of magic. It covers the basics, including setting up an altar, what the basic tools are and how to consecreate them, succinct chapters on the Tree of Life, the major arcana and assigned to the twenty-two paths of the Tree, including the occult meaning for each of these cards based on Hermetic philosophy, and instructions for performing the major rituals essential to magic study, including the Kabalistic Cross, the Middle Pillar, the Greater and Lesser Rituals of the Pentagram and the Hexagram, and more. The chapter on Alchemy includes a pithy section on condensers, gold condensers, Universal solid and liquid condensers, Elemental fluid condensors, plus tinctures and other alchemical processes. There is even a section on the tattwa cards used for meditation and scrying, popularized by the Golden Dawn.
This book is quite condensed and the information is well organized, concise, and ready to use. It serves as a good overview of the essentials of ritual magic, and while it does introduce these concepts, perhaps this book would be more for the intermediate occultist looking to take the leap.
This book is not just another rehashed magic text. Some of the topics, like the Alchemical processes, are not often found in general magic books.

Compact, excellent quick resource

A friend of mine first pointed out this book to me in a book store. If nothing else, I was entranced by the handsome, legant beauty of this little tome.
But pretty books don't get my dollars. It was the information within that sold me. It contains the highest percentage of the best, most accurate and USEFUL magical information that a magician would need to know, all in a very small package. This book could be likened a miniature encyclopedia which contains quick, to-the-point, information on nearly every aspect of Western Magick (with a dash of the best of the Eastern teachings at the end of the book) without droning on and on with useless drivel that you could find in almost any other modern book on Western Magic.
And of special import to me is the fact that the author is one of the VERY few out there who recognizes that the 'traditional' elemental associations in regards to the magician's Tools, (i.e. wands=fire & swords=air) is flat out WRONG. In case you were wondering, as far as the Tools are concerned, wands=air & swords=fire.
Ironically though, if there is any wrong information in the book, it would have to be that the surprisingly correct elemental magical Tool association is not transferred to the Tarot Minor Arcana, meaning that the 'traditional' Tarot elemental associations still apply in this book (wands=fire, swords=air, cups=water, pentacles=earth). I found this error minor, and was not entirely upset about this, as the only author I know who has ever even attempted to correct this ancient mistake of Tarot elemental association in Western Magick is William Blystone, whose works will be published very soon.
All in all, I highly recommend this book to any magician, beginner or otherwise.

Nice little Tome

This book is almost an offshoot of the one written by King and Skinner titled "Techniques of High Magic" with added information and rituals, both eastern and western in tradition.
For any practicing Magician, a nice piece to have around the temple or alter.
The material was well put together, making information easily accessable.
The paper was durable, print multicolored, simulated leather cover with 2 ribbons to tie shut when travelling.
I purchased a second one to send to a Magician I know in Chicago as a gift....and finding the second one in hardcover was difficult.

Feed & Lead by Kenneth O. Gangel

Kenneth O. Gangel is vice president for academic affairs, academic dean, and distinguished professor of Christian Education at Dallas Theological Seminary. He has also held administrative positions at Calvary Bible College and Miami Christian College. He holds degrees in business and college administration as well as theology and Christian education. His doctorates are from the University of Missouri and Mercy College. He is the author of more than twenty books and has written over eight hundred articles for journals and periodicals.
This book was written to straighten out the confusion concerning servant leadership and organism versus organization. The book was also written as a practical manual for Christian leaders (pp. 9-10). Gangel points out in the forward of this book that the secular view of leadership has been dominant in the church. He feels we have forgotten what the Bible description of a leader is. Leaders in the church has been called to be servant leaders. It doesn't mean the person is a doormat or has no backbone, but the biblical view of leadership is leading by serving. This is the first problem Gangel deals with in his book. He also points out that 'Ministry' and 'Management' are not contradictory terms. Many people think that if it is a ministry it is not managed well. This is the second problem Gangel deals with in his book. We tend to think that the churches goals need to be either people-oriented or goal-oriented. Gangel also points out that the goal of the church is not new converts but mature believers (lay leadership development).
I think that Gangel did an excellent job and has fulfilled his stated purposes. The author did an excellent job in relating to the reader throughout the book. Gangel, in every chapter, either asks questions to help you understands what was discussed or to reevaluate what you are doing. I.e., at the end of chapter one he asks you what are the six leadership lessons learned from the life of Moses. Then he asks, "which of these lessons have you learned?" In chapter two he asks you to answer twenty-one questions for 'Spiritual Leaders.' Dr. Gangel does this for every chapter. He also tells stories throughout his book to illustrate his points. An example of this is the story about Charlie and Norma starting on page 217. Gangel gives several outcomes based on how Charlie responds to Norma giving up her teaching position. By his constantly asking questions and telling stories he keeps the readers attention.
The only weakness I noticed in the book was his charts and graphs. He reprinted other writers charts and graphs in his book. Some were good but others were not easy to understand or did not illustrate his point as well as it could have. I.e., the Annual Planning Cycle on page 106 seems confusing. Then also on page 251 the 'Toward A Trained Leadership' chart doesn't clearly communicate the point of results and evaluation which the section was about.
Other than some charts and graphs Gangel's book was an excellent book. As a former Army officer and now as pastor I would highly recommend to anyone that wants to learn to be a better leader and administrator. It is particularly beneficial to those leader in the church whether a profession or lay leader.

Still a winner!

Read this book years ago in seminary; it was very helpful and brought clarity to many pastoral issues. Teaching in a bible college and choose this as my primary text for a Foundation of Pastoral Ministry course. Students appreciate the comprehensive treatment of pastoral ministry! Great book.

biblically driven, tried and true blueprint of God

Very up lifting and thorough. This will definitely give you the beautiful marriage God always wanted you to have.

It takes me about 30 minutes a day to read. Mainly because I'm a slow reader. But its biblically driven. Everything is about conforming to the blueprint God has designed for marriage. "The closer to Jesus we get the closer to each other we'll be." Is the main concept he begins with. Then he branches out with the premise that if we change our relationship with the Lord and faithfully practice the love of God toward one another through the Holy Spirit the minor details will fall into place. If we sensitize ourselves to the voice of God to obey the Spirit's conviction things will work themselves out naturally.

Inspiring, Thought-Provoking Book

This book challenges the believer to see their marriage as God intended it to be. Everyone need a reminder at times of how good things used to be and still can be. It will make you reflect on yourself, your role, and that of your spouse. When I started reading this book I felt overwhelmed and burden by my spouse reactions towards me and only could see his faults. By the end of the book, I realized that the crazy cycle we are on was not solely his fault and I had to look at my own actions. This is my first time writing a book review as I am not an avid reader, but I decided after this book I will make it an habit to read a book that lifts my spirits and give me positive ideas on how I can continue to build my house up and not tear it down with my own words and reactions to situations. I would encourage you to ask your spouse to read this book too, just like my spouse asked me to read it. Inspiring.

No where near stale or predictable at 44!

I will admit I am biased. I am a huge fan of J. D. Robb and the In Death series. I have read and 're-read each book and listened to and 're-listened to each audio book in this series and I'm still not tired or bored. This latest offering doesn't disappoint. The nature of these crimes are for me difficult for me to digest but the overall story is very engaging. I also love seeing Eve and Roarke`s relationship evolve, and grow and this book offers that as well. Only negative is no Mavis nor Nadine this time around. Highly recommended!

The best yet

There are series that haunt you, that crawl inside you and cannot be ignored. Dallas and Roarke are part of my mind. The mysteries are compelling, the dialogue snappy, the pacing perfect and the passion, off the charts. But, most of all, the characters are human... real, flawed, human in a way that connects.

As they work thru the issues of their childhoods as part of the storylines, they help those of us who survived. They stand for justice. They help us see that surviving was not a crime and that living, loving and being happy are our right. Thank you for writing these. Thank you for so clearly showing the echoes we hear and for revealing ways to quiet them.

The storyline is not a fast paced action packed journey, but it is deep and meaningful. The horrors committed by the villain are nightmarish, but as always, Eve and her team, including Roark, handle it quickly. I love the interplay between Eve and Roark. 44 books in and I'm still completely happy with the series.

Eva Mozes Kor was 10 years old when she arrived in Auschwitz. While her parents and two older sisters were taken to the gas chambers, she and her twin, Miriam, were herded into the care of the man known as the Angel of Death, Dr. Josef Mengele. Mengele's twins were granted the privileges of keeping their own clothes and hair, but they were also subjected to sadistic medical experiments and forced to fight daily for their own survival, as most of the twins died as a result of the experiements or from the disease and hunger pervasive in the camp. In a narrative told with emotion and restraint, readers will learn of a child's endurance and survival in the face of truly extraordinary evil. The book also includes an epilogue on Eva's recovery from this experience and her remarkable decision to publicly forgive the Nazis. Through her museum and her lectures, she has dedicated her life to giving testimony on the Holocaust, providing a message of hope for people who have suffered, and working toward goals of forgiveness, peace, and the elimination of hatred and prejudice in the world.

Grade 6 Up—Kor relates memories of life in the village of Portz, Transylvania (Romania), where she was raised on a large farm, "never aware of the anti-Semitism [that pervaded the country] until 1940, when the Hungarian army came." Six-year-old Eva and her identical twin, Miriam, the only Jewish children in their small mixed-grade classroom, suddenly found themselves taunted and beaten by once-friendly classmates. At 10 years of age, the twins and their family were forced to live among seven thousand other Jews in a fenced-in field, protected from the elements only by tents made of their own blankets and sheets and by the clothes on their backs. They were soon taken on a four-day train ride to Auschwitz, standing all the way, with no food or drink. There the sisters were "selected" to be victims of Dr. Josef Mengele's medical "research." Eva's amazing fortitude and her desire to protect her sister helped her to survive a horrible disease brought on by an injection. Both twins endured a terrifying daylong separation during a forced march between camps; the remaining Auschwitz prisoners were liberated by Soviet soldiers, and the girls found a way to go home in search of family survivors. Kor's straightforward first-person narrative is unusual because it details life in the concentration camp through the eyes of a child who lived among children. Heartbreaking, but uplifting. A must-read story!

Surviving the Angel of Death: The Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz is adapted from Eva Mozes Kor's self-published memoir, Echoes From Auschwitz: Dr. Mengele's Twins, The Story Of Eva And Miriam Mozes. This first-person account is intended for readers in grade six and up.

On January 31, 1934, Eva and Miriam Mozes entered the world as identical twin sisters. The twin girls, along with their parents and older sisters Edit and Aliz, lived in the village of Portz in Transylvania, Romania. As the only Jewish family in the community, they increasingly became more and more aware of the growing anti-Semitism pervading the culture. When Eva and her sister began school in 1940, two new teachers were brought into the city by the Nazis. With them, they brought books containing caricatures of Jews and propaganda films. Their classmates began to see them as "Dirty Jews" and turned against them. Things progressively got worse until finally, in 1943, their father decided it was time to try to leave their home and escape to the safety of Romania. Unfortunately, they were too late. The Hungarian Nazi youth had been stationed outside their home to make sure they did not escape.

The year that Eva and Miriam turned ten, they, along with the rest of their family, were transported in a cattle car to Auschwitz. Dressed identically since birth, the girls were quickly identified in their matching dresses. With a flick of Dr. Mengele's baton, they were separated from the rest of their family. Because they were identical twins, they were of particular interest to Dr. Mengele. Dr. Mengele wanted to learn how to create perfect Aryan babies and interred twins, along with giants, dwarfs, the handicapped and gypsies became his human guinea pigs. Eva, the stronger of the twins in spirit, refused to give in to the Nazis. She realized from the beginning that she must survive so that her sister is able to survive. Subjected to horrific experiments and left for dead, Eva will not let her sister down. They will survive Auschwitz together.

In the epilogue, we learn that Eva has forgiven Dr. Mengele. She explains that anger and hatred are seeds of war, while forgiveness is the seed for peace. 1n 1984, Eva and her sister Miriam founded CANDLES (Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors).

I feel that this book is truly remarkable. The atrocities of WWII are difficult to explain to younger individuals, but the particular atrocities of Dr. Mengele are that much more difficult. The authors did an amazing job at toning down the subject matter enough to allow a younger audience to learn from Eva's experience. I read this book with my 10-year-old daughter and although some parts of the book brought tears of sadness to both our eyes, we also shed tears of relief and admiration for this amazing woman and her sister. Although I've read many other books about WWII, I still learned from this book, as did my daughter.

Hard topic deftly handled

This is a book that could easily win a Newbery Medal. The difficult subject matter was presented with sensitivity and grace.

The temptation in writing a book about children in the Holocaust would be to give in to righteous indignation and melodrama. Instead, the authors focus on the remarkable character of Eva, a twin who was determined to keep herself and her sister alive, even while undergoing severe physical abuse. The reader learns what it felt like to be a Jewish girl in a deadly environment, but is not overwhelmed by despair. We admire Eva as she finds numerous ways to survive, relying on unusual strength, determination, and luck.

Although it would be understandable, there is never a hint of the overriding bitterness one might expect to hear from a survivor. Instead, the reader comes away with the feeling that even in the midst of the unspeakable, people can survive and go on to live satisfying lives.

I think Rojany-Buccieri did an outstanding job of taking Kor's memories and translating them into a story that will fascinate junior readers. Bravo!

Eva and Miriam Mozes were just 10 years old when their family was sent to Auschwitz. When their parents and older sisters were sent to the gas chambers, their lives were spared and because they were twins, they became subjects of Dr. Josef Mengele's experiments. In Surviving the Angel of Death, Eva recounts the harrowing ordeals she and Miriam faced. She provides plenty of detail, though there are gaps she cannot fill in - for example, she was deliberately infected with a disease Mengele expected to be fatal so that he could kill Miriam when Eva died and compare the healthy body to the diseased one. She survived, though she still does not know what illness he gave her. Even after the camp was liberated, Eva and Miriam did not have an easy time. They eventually went to Israel, and then to America. Eva describes her difficult early years in Indiana and the anti-Semitism she faced. In 1984, Eva and Miriam founded a support group for people who had been victims of Mengele's sadistic experiments, and in 1995 Eva opened a Holocaust museum in Terre Haute, Indiana. (She is also known as the subject of a recent controversial documentary entitled "Forgiving Dr. Mengele" which highlights her ideas about justice, revenge and the possibility of healing through forgiveness.) Kor and Buccieri include maps to help readers place the events and photos to help make the people seem more real. Though painful to read, Surviving the Angel of Death provides an informative first-hand account of the harrowing experiences of one set of twins at Auschwitz. For ages 14 and up. Marci Bloch
