A Most Thoroughly Detailed Account of Aquinas' Life

Torrell has provided the philosophical community with a most thoroughly detailed account of one of the greatest thinkers to ever walk this planet.
From the youth of Aquinas to his death, Torrell takes his reader on a historical journey through the life, events, thoughts, and works of St. Thomas Aquinas. Torrell uses the best resources available, and painstakingly documents all his sources. What is more, if certain things have been attributed to legend or mere 'story telling for the sake of story telling,' Torrell makes his reader aware of this fact. Thus, his research is honest, and quite detailed.
Every dispute between Aquinas and the Church or other clergy is included. Aquinas' years in Paris are detailed, the things he taught, the people he associated with, his travels, his writings, his habits (which have been documented), his writing methods, etc. all are detailed in this account. In fact, I do not think there is one stone left unturned that can actually be turned in the life of Aquinas, that Torrell has not touched.
Toward the end of this work, which it should be pointed out is written and organized in a nice chronological fashion, Torrell makes mention of those groups who after Aquinas' death formed cults in their following of Aquinas. Moreover, I enjoyed Torrell's account of Aquinas because it was real. What I mean by that is Torrell did not elevate Aquinas to an 'other than human' level and put him high on a pedestal. Rather, Torrell painted a picture of the real Aquinas, warts and all.
If you are wanting a detailed account of Aquinas and his whole life, works, events, etc. then this is the only text you may ever need (although there are others available which would be very helpful as well - i.e. James Weisheipl's account "Friar Thomas D'Aquino, which has been considered the standard biography). I highly recommend Torrell's work and wished I could have given it another star!

Superb technical achievment

Torrell's book is a two-fold masterpiece, but it is not for the faint-of-intellect. Die-hard Thomists will find the historical exegesis of scholarship on Aquinas' life and work to be the most fundamentally rigorous to date. Interspersed within this technical exposition are invaluable insights into the person of Aquinas as a man of faith first and foremost. For me, this book was a joy to read and I am utilizing it in a graduate seminar I will be teaching on Aquinas. That being said, I must warn the non-Thomist reader that they may find this book dry at times in its extreme historical exposition. The best approach to this book for the average reader is to skim through to find the gems contained within. Hence, I highly recommend this book to fans of Thomas Aquinas and cannot wait for the translation of Torrell's second volume to appear.

Nasty

I've bought used books before so I know what to expect. Maybe the occasional highlight or note written. But this book was awful. It's has paragraph after paragraph highlighted and whoever owned this book before was a HEAVY smoker which I'm not so this books stinks. If you want to represent your products as good and acceptable you should really make sure they are.

I really enjoy reading this book. it has really helped me to strengthen my knowledge of anatomy and physiology as a surgical technician. this book speak to my needs as a professional. I highly recommend this book for any surgical technologist who wants to cover all basis and knowledge.

Not a good textbook

The merchants offered this at a great price (thank you!) but the writing is terrible. Unfortunately this is the book used for my A&P classes. There are a few good one-liners regarding specific parts of anatomy, but overall this is not worth the effort to read. It hasn't been updated further since 2006!

A must read for anyone going through difficult times

I was given this book last year as a gift and I instantly fell in love with it. Just the title alone, Overcoming: Discover How to Rise Above and Beyond Your Overwhelming Circumstances in Life immediately had my attention. I defiantly wanted to OVERCOME my overwhelming circumstances! I found it to be a very insightful book with lots of hope, encouragement, and wisdom. It’s a must read for anyone going through difficult times. Each chapter begins with a bible verse and ends with a bullet list of “points to ponder”. There is also a scripture reference guide in the back of the book.

Pastor Steve Mays does a very good job at connecting with the reader! Before he gets into the meat and potatoes of each chapter he gives a personal touch by giving a view into his life and connecting each chapter title with a personal story.

Overcoming is full of memorable quotes so you better have your highlighter ready when reading this book!

Overcoming - Uplifting and Encouraging

I am finding that "Overcoming" is a great book to have in your teaching library. I love the way Pastor Steve Mays teaches; he makes everything so easy to understand and he leaves you wanting more. I was introduced to his church, Calvary Chapel Southbay here in Gardena, CA, and I was truly amazed with his teaching; hen I returned home I looked to see what books he had written and I came across several, but decided to start within"Overcoming", since I needed help in that area right now, let's just say, I can't put this book down. I would highly recommend.

Help to Push through Life's Challenges

Each day life deals challenges that some people call "problems." Pastor Steve Mays has been dealt more than his fair share yet managed to overcome and thrive in spite of it. In the pages of OVERCOMING, you will gain insights and ready-made encouragement from the Scriptures to handle whatever you are facing. This book tackles thirteen key areas which throw up life barriers and God's Word gives us the tools to overcome. Each chapter is filled with straight-forward insight and instruction. For example in the chapter on overcoming suffering, Mays writes, "The Bible promises us that we will be comforted in our suffering. It does not promise that we will always understand our suffering, nor does it promise that God will deliver us from pain, suffering or even death; but it does promise He will always be with us." (Page 34) Every chapter includes simple personal application questions for the reader called Points to Ponder.

The final pages of OVERCOMING asks, "What are you trying to overcome in your life today? Have you been trying to change but feel like you keep slamming your head against a wall? Do you keep failing? Have you tried every 12-step program, self-help book and positive thinking exercise there is, only to come up short? I want to encourage you to start with the right foundation--a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Only God, working in and through you, can give you the victory of overcoming." (Page 169)
