About the Author
Leonard Nimoy was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1931. After his feature film debut in 1951, he pursued his acting career on the big screen as well as on stage and television. However, it was Nimoy's portrayal of the character Mr. Spock in the science fiction series "Star Trek" that earned him iconic status as well as three Emmy nominations. Aside from his numerous credits as an actor and director, Nimoy is also a successful recording artist and author, having published two autobiographies as well as several volumes of poetry, two of which also feature his photographs. He has long been interested in photography, and studied at UCLA with Robert Heineken in the early 1970s. He recently finished an appointment as artist-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome. Nimoy is represented by Bonni Benrubi Gallery in New York and Louis Stern Fine Art in Los Angeles. Donald Kuspit (Essay) is an art critic and a professor of art history and philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. An author of numerous articles, exhibition reviews, and catalog essays, Kuspit has written more than twenty books, including Redeeming Art: Critical Reveries (Allworth), and Idiosyncratic Identities: Artists At The End Of The Avant-Garde (Cambridge University Press.)

AWESOME!

I have always been a huge Leonard Nimoy fan, so when I saw this book on Amazon I just had to order it. It is not at all what I was expecting, it is so much better then that! The pictures in it are simply amazing. I use to keep it out as a coffee table book, but I became afraid that something may happen to it, so now I have it up for safekeeping. I still take it out every so often to check it out, and I always seem to get a "lift" from it. Well worth the price.

Please be warned that it does have some riskay pictures in it that some readers/viewers may not fully appreciate or be offended by. But if that sort of stuff does not bother you ORDER IT NOW!

Beautiful work

... this is a beautiful book. It celebrates the sensual and spiritual without the predictable "the body is evil" ethos that is so sadly common in the Jewish and Christian religions.
The body is beautiful, reflective of the beauty of its Creator (if you believe in one), and of the beauty of nature. Leonard Nimoy proves himself to be a suprisingly skilled photographer in capturing the beauty.
Nimoy, for so long defined by his portrayal of a fictional character in a television and film series, has shown a different, and appealing, side of himself in this work. Highly, highly recommended.

Rielly begins with a history of karate before going on to information about the uniform, including the meaning of the belt colors, the rules and etiquette of the dojo, and the interaction between student and teacher. The actual stances are clearly portrayed in watercolor-and-ink artwork that features both boys and girls in a number of stances and practicing thrusts and kicks. The book ends with advice for advancing in karate. A small note on the copyright pages advises readers to check with a doctor before proceeding with martial-arts training. There is also mention in the text that karate is to protect oneself, not cause harm, but more could have been made of that point. Boxes throughout offer definitions and training tips. About the Author
Robin Rielly began training in the Japanese martial arts in 1959. He holds a sixth-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate from the Japan Karate Association (JKA) and a second-degree black belt in Shin Kage-ryu jujutsu from the Kobukan School in Yokohama, Japan. A graduate of the JKA Instructors' Training Institute, he is qualified as an official instructor, examiner, and tournament judge. He is the author of Complete Shotokan Karate, Secrets of Shotokan Karate, Japan's Complete Fighting System: Shin Kage Ryu, and Karate Basics.

Neatly done

I wrote a book about teaching martial arts and run a kid's karate class so I believe that I can speak with authority when I say that Rielly's book is well-rounded, easy to read and very child appropriate. It covers all the basics including a brief history of karate, why students might be interested in studying this martial art, an explanation of the karate uniform, description of the dojo (practice hall), discussion of etiquette, overview of warm up routines, explanation of basic techniques, and description of advancement testing practices. If your child is thinking about taking karate this book can help set his/her expectations and increase his/her chance of success. There is a small caveat about the appropriate use of karate in the front but I wish he'd spent a little more time on that particular aspect. New practitioners, especially younger ones, have a tendency to get into trouble for inappropriately trying out their skills on classmates at school. The sensei (teacher) should cover this but it is always good to know ahead of time. All in all, this book is a great overview for kids.

About the Author
Michael Sugich is a native of Santa Barbara, California and studied at UCLA and the California Institute of the Arts. He was initiated into a traditional Sufi order in 1972. Since that time he has studied Sufi doctrine and practice with spiritual masters across the Arab and Islamic world. He lived for 23 years in the precincts of the sacred city of Makkah Al Mukaramah where he kept company with many men of knowledge and illumination. He has written Palaces of India (Pavilion Books), a travel book, and Living in Makkah (Macdonald Publishers), a children's book, and, most recently a feature documentary film on the life of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, Faisal: Legacy of a King.

It's nice to hear interesting stories about modern dedicated Muslims that you thought existed, as well as some more famous ones. From each can you derive a quality.

It reminds me of "The Sufis of Andalusia: The Ruh al-quds and al-Durrat al-Fakhirah" by Ibn 'Arabi. It would be nice to see even more of this sort of stuff.

Skins, a British teen dramedy set in Bristol, England, chronicles the lives of a core group of friends at Roundview College. Often heralded as the best, the original ensemble is an eclectic bunch, transcending Breakfast Club stereotypes, and even the rigid clique systems of high school. Named after the slang for rolling paper, the show heavily features the pursuit and use of drugs. From the beginning, the series has incited a lot of controversy through its depiction of teen sexuality, mental illness, underage drinking and drug use. The term "Skins Party," was coined shortly after the show's debut, referring to the phenomenon of out-of-control parties in the U.K. and France, inspired by the show's portrayals of reckless behavior and cheap, sexy fun. (Seriously, where are the parents?!) While partying, drugs and sex are central themes to the series, the show strives to stay true to the issues that many of its young viewers face. To the critics who have accused the show of being too exaggerated or sensational, creator Bryan Elsley defends the series saying, "[Skins] tries to tell the truth. Sometimes that truth can be a little painful to adults and parents."[2] Written by young writers and told from the perspective of teenagers, the series has found a niche in the zeitgeist of British youth culture. Although it arguably glamorizes sex and drugs and promotes excessive partying, Skins has been used in anti-drug campaigns and helped many teens broach difficult subjects with teachers and parents.

MEET THE AUTHOR

After graduating with a degree in art history from the University of Chicago, Elspeth taught English in Saga, Japan, a rural prefecture famous for two things-mudskippers and an International Hot-Air Balloon Fiesta. She loves to travel, and writing about her misadventures has always been a passion for her. Relatively new to San Francisco, she frequents karaoke bars, trains for races, and explores the city like a flaneur, minus the top hat (not that she has anything against them). She has a lot of pretentious-sounding hobbies, like analog photography and ranking the best sushi-speriences of her life, but is genuine in her interests. Last year, she published an article about her teaching experiences in Eureka, a journal for English teachers in Japan, and won a Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for a song she co-wrote. So sex, plus power, equals fun." Relationships are a game to Tony, and his end goal is to sustain his own fun and interest.

I took the class at U of R, taught by Boyd, and of course this book was the text. Not recommended. There are much better books on radiometry out there.

Classic coverage - not most up to date, but will never be obsolete

Author concentrates on radiometry and detector basics, and does not give up to date performance specs on detectors or current trends etc which may soon be out of date. He does not cover readout electronics. I appreciate the fact that he derives a lot of things (formulas for integrating sphere, fourth power cosine law, etc.) instead of just stating results. He does the basics, and in my opinion does them very well. He also does not take forever to come to the point.
