Great introduction to writing workshop in elementary classrooms

Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide is a valuable resource for developing and maintaining a writing workshop in the classroom. This text is part of my writing methods class in my senior year of an elementary education undergraduate program. Writing Workshop provides exactly the information needed for teachers who are interested in making a writing workshop work in their classroom in a straightforward and easy to read manner. As someone who is planning to teacher either elementary school or middle school, the content in this book is extremely relevant. High school teachers may have less to gain from reading this book than elementary or middle school teachers because of the content and examples that Fletcher and Portalupi choose to include.

What I appreciated most about this book is that the authors recognize and acknowledge that doing a writing workshop every day in your classroom might not be realistic. Even better, they provide advice for incorporating it into your instruction, even with limited time in your schedule. The focus isn’t on making time to incorporate a full writing workshop in your classroom, it is on creating a consistent amount of time for students to write each week.

Writing Workshop consists of twelve chapters, beginning with an introduction to the concept of writing workshops in classrooms and concluding with methods of troubleshooting specific issues within the workshop. The book closes by providing a timeline for a year of successful writing workshops. Each of the eight chapters in between the introduction and conclusion detail how a specific component of the writing workshop looks, functions, and is taught – both in the ideal situation and with limited time and/or resources. These include the time and space required; short-term goals for the workshop; how to launch the workshop with students; what conferring with writers looks like; how to incorporate literature in the workshop; what skills to teach; and how to assess and evaluate. Each of these sections is less than twenty pages and covers the major questions and concerns that a teacher may have who is looking to begin a writing workshop in his/her classroom.

Ultimately, this book is one that I plan on keeping and using as a resource for my instruction as I have my own classroom next year.

Writing Workshop is a well-organized and easy to understand book that informs educators about the implementation and process involved in a writing workshop. Ralph Fletcher and JoAnn Portalupi lay out each step in the writing workshop process, including the foundational classroom principles necessary for a successful writing workshop. This book is definitely well suited for teachers in the K-8 classroom who have limited time for researching how to implement a writing workshop in their own classrooms. Ultimately, this book will be a quick read with very applicable suggestions for your own classroom.
The idea of implementing writing workshop into your own classroom can often seem daunting, however Writing Workshop provides clear examples and answers to many teachers’ questions and concerns about this teaching method. Fletcher and Portalupi address the importance of time to write (3 days a week minimum), in addition to the question that almost all teachers ask now-a-days: “How can I assess my students during writing workshop?” Writing Workshop provides specific assessment strategies, in addition to instructions and suggestions for conferring with students about their progress in the writing process.
Writing Workshop also addresses the foundational classroom principles necessary in order to launch a writing workshop. Fletcher and Portalupi make it very clear that reading and writing must go together, and that specifically, using mentor texts is vital for the success of a writing workshop. They also address the principle of acceptance: all students must feel accepted and safe in their classroom environment.
While this text is very useful for k-8 teachers, it would not be as helpful for high school teachers, as many of the examples are focused toward elementary and middle school age students. For teachers who use a very rigid curriculum, the implementation of the writing workshop outlined in this book may seem unrealistic. However, I do believe it is still worth reading, as some of the ideas posed in Writing Workshop could be implemented within or as a substitute for some of the rigid curriculum.

All of Ralph Fletcher's books are amazing, and this one is no exception. For those of you who need direction on how to start a writer's workshop in your classroom this is the book for you. I was unsold on how effective implementing a writer's workshop in my classroom would be, but after reading this book I am completely sold. I followed his suggestions and am seeing so much improvement in my second graders' writing in just the few short weeks that I have been doing this. For anyone on the fence about this, this is the book that you need to read. It is a fairly quick and easy read and is written in a way that makes you feel as though the author is just sitting there conversing with you.

If you have not read an interview by Orianna Fallaci, then this book, Interview with History, is a must read. Not only is she well versed in history and politics, she has an irreverent, poignant, disciplined yet adventurous approach to interviewing some of the world's most powerful personalities in the early 1970's. Somehow she manages to elicit comments that are candid and revealing in ways the interviewees never anticipated, and which for the reader--and Ms. Fallaci--are fresh and welcome in our age of celebrity and superficial journalism. Ms. Fallaci's background perspective in each interview, her insites, her perspective, offer the reader a sharp, insightful mind that challenges our thinking...in the best possible way.

This is one of the best collection of interviews I've read, and show us how journalism can and should be. Spin politicians and businesspeople, beware...you won't like Ms. Fallaci's approach and assessments. But for those of us who are tired of cant and empty rhetoric, her interviews are a glimpse into how we should all approach politicians and celebrities: with sceptism, with intelligence, with principle. It's a great, highly recommended read...I only wish she could continue interviewing--and exposing--the foibles and attitudes of those the media annoints as worthy.

This is a particularly relevant book, the parallels with current world affairs fascinating. The interviews, with the benefit of hindsight, clarify what went wrong (and right) during some of the most significant conflicts in modern history; but more than anything, they provide a view of the critical leadership that, in most cases, was founded from the most honorable intentions, regardless the side they represented.

Great Book

I have been so blessed by this book. Greenwood goes in deep into what strongholds are and how we can take them down. It brought a lot insight into my own personal thought patterns, but also made me understand why family and friends react a certain way to situations. There has been a couple of times I even gave myself a little sozo (greek word for , saved, healed and delivered) I also loved the insight she brought about how the heart is a little brain and communicates with our mind. So, the things that pierce our heart does effect our thought process. I really encourage any Christian to read this. It's eye opening and healing.

About the Author
Flavio Francisco Marsiglia (PhD, Case Western Reserve University; MSW, Universidad de la Rep�blica, Uruguay) is the Distinguished Foundation Professor of Cultural Diversity and Health in the School of Social Work at Arizona State University. He is the recipient of the 2006 National Award of Excellence in Mentorship from the National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse, the 2012 Community, Culture, and Prevention Science Award from the Society for Prevention Research, and the 2014 Google Award of Diversity and Inclusion of Arizona State University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.

Stephen Kulis (PhD, MA, Columbia University) is professor of sociology in the T. Denny Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University. Ok summary, not stunningly insightful

This book's alright. It's clearly written and covers all the major topics related to diversity and oppression. There's some history and some theory. There are cool little "Notes from the Field" which are 4-5 examples in each chapter of real world stories related to the chapter's topic. I'd consider those the highlight of the book, though it'd be nice if they were a little more involved or in-depth. The whole approach of the book just seems very light and simplistic, and it'd be neat to see a little more thought-provocation on the topic. I'd give it three stars for content alone, but the visual and organizational presentation of the content is solid compared to other textbooks I've read, so I'll bump to four stars.

After recently becoming an amputee, I must say it is refreshing to be able to relate to some of the emotional struggles Amy goes through. This book has opened doors for me in ways I never thought could happen. Here's to spreading our wings.

Indomitable Spirit and Love of Life

I really enjoyed reading the story of Amy's triumph in both the Paralympics and Dancing With the Stars after she overcame a devastating blow to her health. She lost both legs beneath the knee and had to have a kidney replacement after suffering through a debilitating sudden bout of meningitis when she was just 19. She made her living as a masseuse and was a committed snowboarder - both of which are very physical and require you to be on your feet. After the amputation, no one knew how much of her mobility she could recover. She didn't waste a lot of time feeling sorry for herself, and even walked down the aisle at her sister's wedding less than 2 months after the amputation.

Amy's indomitable spirit and lack of self-pity comes through on every page of this memoir. I don't know how many ways there are to say "inspiring" but certainly every other reviewer has already covered this ground. Her missing legs don't define her. She wrote that "obstacles in our lives can only do one of two things: stop us dead in our tracks, or force us to get creative..." She definitely did the latter! She couldn't do anything about the loss of her legs, but she could carry on with her life with passion and creativity and that's what she chose to do.

I had missed her season on DWTS, so went to YouTube to find the videos of her performances, which were incredible. I also watched her brief, emotional TED talk. Amy has learned that "a fulfilling life isn't based on what we have or don't have; it's based on what we give of ourselves". She is a determined, energetic survivor who will continue to give.

A great book for the start of a new year

I'll begin with a confession: I've never watched an episode of Dancing with the Stars, and, until I found this book, I'd not heard of Amy Purdy. But I always look for stories of inspiring people, people who overcome obstacles to accomplish great things. I bought this book knowing nothing more about it than the description on Amazon, and I'm glad I did.

Amy Purdy writes:

"We don't always get to decide which course we go down or know which mountains we'll face. Yet we always have the most important choice there is: whether to resist, or to give ourselves over to the twists and turns of the terrain."

The wisdom in that quote is more poignant considering the mountains Ms. Purdy has faced, certainly not ones she would have chosen. But she turned her losses and her trials into opportunities to become a great athlete and person, and to inspire people all over the world.

*Spoiler alert*

The author writes of her nearly fatal meningitis, of her loss of both feet, of her kidney transplant, and of her many other `mountains,' as opportunities. She doesn't want any sympathy; she proves that she doesn't need it. From re-learning to walk, to winning an Olympic bronze medal in snowboarding, she is always strong and determined.

Ms. Purdy is not the only hero in the story. Throughout, she gives credit to the people who loved and helped her. Her parents and sister, for instance, who never left her bedside during the weeks she spent in the hospital. Amy's mother and father, and their unconditional love, devotion, and willingness to sacrifice for their children, are examples of the kind of parent we all should want and hope to be.

Ms. Purdy uses her accomplishments to help and inspire others, whether it's by traveling to South Africa to give shoes to village children, creating opportunities for other athletes, or writing this book:

"I didn't write this book because I want you to say, `Wow, look at what that girl overcame....' I'm sharing my story because I want you to see what's possible in your own life. Right here. Right now."

I'm grateful to have read On My Own Two Feet at the start of this new year. It makes me want to work harder, show more love, and be more thankful for my life and everyone in it.

There follow chapters in which the intricate molecular machinery that adapts the organisms metabolism and development to life in the soil, including antibiotic production, is illuminated by the DNA blueprint. Then come an up-to-the minute account of the use of genetic engineering to make novel, hybrid, antibiotics, and a topical description of techniques to learn the roles of the thousands of genes in a genome sequence, throwing a powerful light on the biology of the organisms and their harnessing for increasing antibiotic productivity. In the final chapter we return to the mycobacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy, the first actinomycetes to be discovered, and how methodology, in part derived from the study of the streptomycetes, is being applied to understand and control these still deadly pathogens.
