Practical Graphical Data Analysis - Not for Beginners

One of my favorite books on advanced graphical data analysis, along with books by Cleveland, Tukey, and Tufte.

Not for beginners, but great for aspiring researchers who want better understanding of their data through graphical techniques. People who rely purely on Excel or similar for their analysis will struggle to make use of many of these methods. For those interested in getting the most out of statistical packages, like R, your time with this book will be rewarded.

Still relevant

This book is certainly of its time, and the rapid development of computer graphical tools since publication has meant that there are options for data exploration which were unachievable at the time of writing. Nevertheless, it makes for an excellent primer for how to think about exploring data and why various graphical approaches make sense before get caught up in the details of how to finesse your chart of choice. It is one of the classics in the field of data visualization.

Nice, short book to make yourself familiar with Pythonic syntaxes

"Writing Idiomatic Python 3" attempts to uncover the elegance of Python3 syntax; what programmers call 'Pythonic code'.
Python has plethora of cool ways to trim down and beautify code. This book deals with them one by one.

What I liked:
I learned a lot of "hidden" features..well, hidden for beginners/intermediate users at least, some of which follow:
- Use of iterable to avoid repetition of value comparison. Sample: if name in ('Tom', 'Dick', 'Harry')
- Use of enumerate() function to eliminate maintenance of an explicit index variable in a loop.
- * operator to represent "rest" of a list while unpacking it.
- Along the same line of unpacking, use of '_' as a placeholder to ignore an unpacked value.
- Clever use of set to eliminate duplicate entries from an Iterable.
- Swiss knife for Iterables: itertools module

What I disliked:
I object against avoiding explicit comparison to None. Agreed, the author has pointed out an exception where one should explicitly compare with None. However, I find it safer to be consistent.
Also, I find it a bit aggressive to use the title "Harmful" in order to depict the non-recommended code sample. I would rather prefer terms "Pythonic" and "UnPythonic".

Who should read this book?
This is a must-read book for people who are acquainted with Python. Complete beginners, however, might find it difficult to keep their heads above water. It kind of hangs in between post-beginner and advanced levels.
I would strongly recommend this book to the Java/c# immigrants. With such a short Pythonic reference in hand, they should feel themselves at home.
Even those who have been writing in Python since long, but are still unaware of Pythonic style of writing code, could find this book an enlightening read.

Great book for any Python developer!

First of all, this book isn't a tutorial. If you want to get up to speed on Python I recommend Learn Python the Hard Way, 3rd edition, Python In A Day, or Learning Python, 5th Edition. Once you get a basic understanding of Python, this book will suddenly come alive in usefulness.

The author goes over an amazing number of idioms, but in a way that isn't tiring and serves as a great reference. I've programmed in Python since 2005, yet in reading this book I discovered a few things about Python as well some handy tricks to clarify my code. Each chapter, section, or subsection includes both harmful and idiomatic (good) examples displayed in very legible, highlighted code. Also, there are page breaks between each chapter, section, and subsection, making it even easier to reference. For teams and projects, this book can readily serve as an easily reference coding guide. I know because I've been on, or heard about projects where we used it in this capacity.

The book is just pure text and code. Wise move! Books should either have good art or no art. Good or amusing art in a technical book breaks up dense content or reinforces a message, whereas low quality or tacky art distracts the reader and diminishes the entire work.

The only possibly issue I have is the author's preference for absolute over relative arguments in subsection 3.3.2. It's a tiny, tiny issue that depends on your project and use case, so please don't get hung up on it.

All in all, I heartily recommend this book. The price is worth it, and the cleaner code you write will make the book pay for itself in the improved productive of you and your team.

This is a must buy book for all Python developers - new or experienced.

I got the book with the preorder discount from the author's website. (Both 2.7 and 3.3 - pdf & epub versions for $12.99). It's a great deal and I'm very happy with it, as a new Python developer, coming from a Java environment.

Kindle version not functional for quick cross-referencing

My 2-star rating is in reference to the format, not the textbook itself.

I try to purchase the Kindle version of as many of my textbooks as possible to limit the load I need to carry to nursing school every day. Some are totally worthwhile. Unfortunately, this text requires quick accessibility for cross-referencing which (somewhat ironically because it's digital) is not easily done in the Kindle format.

This is not an attack on the Kindle or the textbook (it's a fantastic book); I simply recommend that if you need this book, you buy the hard copy.

Great book, lacking advertised online material

I love the book. I updated from the 8th edition which has served me well. Me and my fellow nursing students across many schools prefer this book for care plans.

If I was reviewing JUST the hard copy, it would be 5 stars.

However, the publishers is still missing many online resources that the book advertises having, the one most important in my opinion being the Care Plan Constructor.

I know it seems like not a big enough reason to give it 3 stars, but it was the ONLY reason I updated. The eight edition costs 10$ shipped used and will be more than enough. I know a few people going for their Masters or NP who still use 8th.

Im half debating on returning it for it being mis-advertised.

Simply the best book of its type. Easy to use, simple handy index, and access to EBP interventions for every nursing diagnosis with references. A must for every nursing instructor and I insist my students purchase this. They all love this book and it becomes their most indispensable textbook for their student career.

About the Author
Johny K. Johansson (Ph.D, University of California, Berkeley) received his Masters and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. At Georgetown, he teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and offers� International Marketing consulting to a number of organizations including: Honda, Mazda, Volvo, and Fuji Film. Dr. Johansson’s research interests are in the areas of International Marketing Strategy, Global Branding, Japanese Management, and Quantitative Analysis of Marketing Decision Problems. He is also the author of numerous publications including Global Marketing: Foreign Entry, Local Marketing and Global Management; In Your Face: How American Marketing Excess Fuels Anti-Americanism; and Relentless: The Japanese Way of Marketing, which has now been translated into six languages, including Chinese, Spanish, and French. In 2010, Dr. Johansson was presented the Award for Lifetime Contribution to Global Marketing by the American Marketing Association, and most recently, in 2011, was inducted as Fellow of the Academy of International Business.

Kurt A. Carlson (Ph.D, Cornell University), is Associate Professor of Marketing at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. He is the Research Director of the Georgetown Institute for Consumer Research and the Director of the McDonough School of Business’s Behavior Research Lab. Doctor Carlson earned his B.S. and M.S. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His research focuses are the influence of emerging preferences on brand choice processes, consumers’ goals and objectives during a choice process, and biases in consumer judgments and decision making. His research has been published in top marketing, psychology, and management journals. He is the recipient of the 2010 MSB Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Research Award and the 2012 Publication Award from the Decision Analysis Society. Professor Carlson is a member of the American Marketing Association, the Association for Consumer Research, the Society for Consumer Psychology, and the Society for Judgment and Decision Making.

Concise, nicely written, and nice managerial take-aways.

A contemporary and cutting edge choice for an intro course in Brand Management for MBAs, or undergraduates. A nicely written nine chapter paperback, which works very well for 10-12 week courses. The chapters hit on all key topics, offering managerial frameworks and discussions. This is the second year that I'm using this text. In addition to the clear writing, I like its structure and conciseness, which allows me to easily work my own materials and readings.

I dont know what the target market the authors intended for this book. It's boring, superficial and scarce of insightful case studies, which are characteristic of textbooks in the old days. However, its deficient theoretical framework would deter professors from adopting it for their courses. In short, not recommended!
