J. Michael Hogan is Professor of Rhetoric and Co-Director of the Center for Democratic Deliberation at Penn State University.

Patricia Hayes Andrews
Patricia Hayes Andrews is Professor of Speech Communication, Adjunct Professor of Business Administration, and Adjunct Professor of Gender Studies at Indiana University. She teaches courses in organizational communication, communication education, and business and professional communication. She joined Indiana's faculty in 1975, became Associate Professor in 1980 and Professor in 1985. From 1984-1988 she served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences with primary responsibility for curriculum and instruction. As a Lilly Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow, she devised and put into operation the TA Training Program in Speech Communication, one of the first such programs in the College. Awards for teaching include the Amoco Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award, Indiana University; Outstanding Young Teacher Award, Central States Speech Association; Outstanding Faculty Award, Student Alumni Council, Indiana University; and the Teaching Excellence Award, School of Continuing Studies, Indiana University. In addition, the Women in Communication of Indiana University presented her with their Mentor Award. In addition to classroom teaching, Andrews has run several in-service workshops and training sessions for various professional groups. She is the author or co-author of several pedagogical works and textbooks, including "Effective Employment Interviewing: Unlocking Human Potential" (1982: Scott, Foresman & Co.); "Communication"" for Business and the Professions" (7th ed.,2000: McGraw Hill); and "Organizational Communication: Empowerment in a Technological Society" (1996: Houghton Mifflin). Andrews's general research interests are in the areas oforganizational and small group communication, with particular focus on gender and leadership and on variables influencing decision-making processes in groups, including the role of technology. She presently serves as an associate editor for "Communication"" Monographs" and "The Journal of Applied Communication." In 1997, she won the Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship given by the National Communication Association. In 2000, she was awarded a $10,000 Preparing Future Faculty Grant from NCA to enhance the teacher training and development program in the Department of Communication and Culture at Indiana University.
James Andrews
James R. Andrews is Professor of Communication and Culture, Adjunct Professor of American Studies, and Adjunct Professor of Victorian Studies at Indiana University. For fifteen years (1977-1993), he served as chair of the department of Speech Communication. Before coming to Indiana, he taught at the University of California-Santa Barbara, and at Columbia University. He is a member of the Honors Faculty at Indiana University and has taught undergraduate courses in public speaking, political communication, rhetorical criticism, and public address, as well as graduate courses and special seminars in American and British public address, rhetorical criticism, and American Studies. The author or co-author of seven books, Andrews's recent works include "American Voices" (1989: Longman Publishing Group), "The Practice of Rhetorical Criticism" (1990: Prentice Hall), and "Contemporary American Voices" (1992). "Reading Rhetorical Texts," co-authored with Michael C. Leff and Robert Terrill, was published by Houghton Mifflinin 1998. In 1997, Indiana University presented him with the all-university Sylvia E. Bowman Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the National Communication Association honored him with the Donald Ecroyd Award for Distinguished Teaching in Higher Education. He received an Indiana University Teaching Excellence Recognition Award in 1999. Andrews's research interests focus on the historical-critical investigation of British and American public discourse. He is the author of numerous critical studies that have appeared in such scholarly journals as "Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Western Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly," and "Communication"" Studies," and he has published several essays in volumes of collected studies. He received the Winans-Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address and twice won the American Forensic Association's Award for Outstanding Research. In 1993, he received the Speech Communication Association's Douglas Ehninger Distinguished Rhetorical Scholar Award. He was elected an NCA Distinguished Scholar in 2000. A past editor of "Communication"" Studies," Andrews also has served on the editorial boards of the "Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs," and "Communication"" Studies." He is an active member of the Central States Communication Association and the National Communication Association and, most recently, served as a member of the NCA's Publications Board.
Glen Williams
Glen Williams graduated in 1993 with a Ph.D. in rhetoric and public address from Indiana University. While a doctoral candidate, Williams directed the basic course inInterpersonal Communication at Indiana University (1990-1991). While working on his dissertation, he taught at Southwest Missouri State University (1991-1992) and at Indiana University Southeast (1992-1993). In 1993, he accepted a position at Texas A&M University as visiting assistant professor and director of the basic course in public speaking. He served in that capacity until 1997, when he accepted a tenure track position at the University of Akron as director of the basic courses in the School of Communication. While he enjoyed Akron, Williams took a position the following year at Southeast Missouri State University, finding it more compatible with his interests. At Southeast, he oversees the basic course in public speaking and has a joint appointment in the School of Education. He teaches courses in communication pedagogy, persuasion, public address, rhetorical criticism, and public speaking. Williams's research interests center upon communication education, particularly leadership in the basic course and instructor training and development, and his work has been published in various volumes of the "Basic Communication Course Annual." In addition, his projects in rhetorical criticism appear in "The Southern Communication Journal" and the "Quarterly Journal of Speech."


James R. Andrews, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon in sports medicine and a pioneer in arthroscopic surgery. His patients and consultations include Albert Pujols, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, Roger Clemens, John Smoltz, Charles Barkley, Jack Nicklaus, Hope Solo, Bo Jackson, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and both Manning brothers. "Sports Illustrated" recently named him as one of the top forty most influential people in the NFL. He is the team doctor for Auburn University, the University of Alabama, the Washington Redskins, and the Tampa Bay Rays. He is a founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Alabama, and the Andrews Research and Education Institute in Gulf Breeze, Florida.

This one was bad guys I hated it. Mia talks to her friend Phil aboutsome guy she likes and he tells her he is on the DL. I think I rather read about Phil he seems more interesting. Don't let me get on the editing....felt like I was trying to read the word more than the story.

This book was such a letdown. I give it 2 stars instead of 1 because you can tell there is a storyline there it just doesn't evolve as it should. There is too much mention of irrelevent things and very very very poor editing.

Really just a list of vocab

The book is really just a vocab list with cursory translations into English. Good words to know, but subtle differences and contextual use are not explained. The script is written without diacritics, but the CD helps with pronunciation.

Nice list of Vocabulary

This book is excellent for vocabulary. It really is just a list of vocabulary words, there are no exercises with them or explanations about the words. It is very useful though because since I have started using it, I'm understanding words used on Persian TV and radio a lot better. I have been going through articles on BBC and it has been very helpful to me. I recommend this for people who are already intermediate or advanced in Persian and need to increase their vocabulary. This book also comes with mp3 audio and a link to flashcards with the words on them. I love this book and would have given it five stars, but I gave it four because I wish there were some exercises involving the new words.

Definitely one of the better instruction books.

I have bought many guitar books, CDs, DVDs, etc. like many of you. Most are well-done but just have limited usefulness or appeal. This book is very professionally done, and about the only book that I have worked through each lesson. It's put together almost like a textbook, small, hardcover and spiralbound. It contains 29 focused lessons with explanations, full-color photographs, chord listing, music notation and tab, playing tips, and general guitar information. It has country, blues, and latin rhythms, etc. It also teaches songs like Scarborough Fair and Morning Has Broken. It has 30 picking patterns listed, which is why I really bought the book. It contains a CD for the lessons, and the only criticism I have is that the picking patterns are not played on the CD. I would have liked to hear what they sound like, but I can still pick through them. But everything else is top-rate so I am giving it a five.

Good beginners book!

I've been playing guitar on and off for the last 25 years. One of my biggest passions, and one I fail at consistently is learning how to play fingerstyle guitar. I have many, many books on fingerstyle techniques. This is one of the better ones. Each lesson is nice and short which helps avoid burnout while trying to learn a longer piece.

The book progresses from single quarter notes played with your thumb up to more advanced pieces like Scarborough Fair.

The included CD is fantastic as it allows you to play along with the lessons.

I've only had this book for about a week but I love it and would recommend it to anyone who struggles with fingerstyle guitar and wants a good place to start.

Great book for content. Supersmall print. I had to pick the book up and hold it inches from my face. Try to memorize all the information and play each exercise that way, as the book cannot be read while holding the guitar. It's supersmall print. I wish this same book came in regular music book size.

Best All-Around Class Handbook

This is by far my favorite "Complete _____'s Handbook." Nearly everything in here is essential if you want to have a real thief, and not just a bunch of stats. The kits are some of the best I've seen. Other Handbooks have outlandish or just downright worthless kits (for instance, take that Ranger kit that turns you into a tree!). In this one, however, every kit is unique, and yet believable and fun to play. For a long time, this handbook was the only information available on Thieves' Guilds. If that's what you're after, however, I'd recommend Den of Theieves, which fleshes it out even more and provides all sorts of adventure possibilities. Round this book out with new equipment and magic items, and you have a classic.

Awesome Complete Handbook

If you have ever played or have ever wanted to play a thief character you need this book. Before I got this handbook, no one really wanted to play the thief in the group and usually was just a second character for someone. Thieves just open locks and occasionally fire their bows right?
WRONG. This book opens up many faucets of the class that I had never thought of and expands on the rest. The kits in this book really give character to your thief characters. Ever wonder why thugs were always thieves class, well check out the bandit or thug kits. I have heard complaints about the kits not having a lot benefits\hindrances (and the majority don't), but what they do offer is flair and adjusts abilities (including thief abilities as well as proficiencies) to better fit the thief's many roles.
This is also the only handbook that has any good new proficiencies. I especially liked alertness, fast talking, intimidation, and observation. I also liked the new equipment section. WOW! It has all kinds of cool stuff that would make any thief character's mouth water and don't even unbalance game play. The book is worth it just for this and the kits.
But there is more. The book also gives new info on lock picking (advanced locks, modifying checks) and on poisons and antidotes. There is a great deal of info on thieves' guilds. A LOT. Probably even more than you would want to know, but that's okay. Use what you like skip what you don't. If thieves' guilds even show up in your campaigns, I highly recommend this for DMs. The book also gives useful info on running thief based campaigns that gave me lots of ideas on how to make life in the city a little more interesting. Ever want to run a campaign solely in Greyhawk City or Waterdeep, well try it.
All in all this is a great resource for players and DMs alike.

One of the finest guide books in the world!

If it is a single thief you want, or a whole thieves guild, this is the ONLY book you need! The character subclasses such as cutpurse give such a depth into the game. I have used this to develope a guide run city, with 150+ guide members, from all of the subclasses listed in the book. It gives such depth! As a thief user myself it is now indispensible. Even the new item lists are superb! Get it if you use thieves at all!!!

Amazing book; problems with kindle version

To get the kindle bits out of the way: quite a few lines in this book were randomly converted to a tiny font for some reason. I can read it. People with bad eyes won't be able to. In any case, it shouldn't look like this; I'm pretty sure the hardcover doesn't.

The book itself is irreplaceable. To my knowledge, no other book covers the grains market from growing the stuff to the futures market. Various basis trades done by farmers and grain elevators are described. The biology of growing grains is described. The motivation of all market participants is described. Some of the major players are described. This book is wonderful; I wish something like it existed for all the futures markets. It's not going to give you the latest Andy Lo approved econometric models for the forward curve; this book is meant to be used by practitioners, hedgers and speculators at all levels of sophistication. It's the real nuts and bolts of the grain trade.

This was both informative about grain marketing principles and on better understanding the overall workings of the markets. The writing style was excellent in that what could be a relatively technical, boring subject was presented in an enjoyable, fun read. i would definitely recommend this book to any producer who wants to better understand what makes the markets work, and how one might best avail of the opportunities presented to sell grain via futures, options, etc..

I've read the book cover to cover, and I now understand how the futures markets work. The roles of "producers" and "consumers" are explained, and why one or the other would be "short the market" versus "long the market" is clear.

The book was enjoyable to read and I will probably read it again.

Tough to follow

Perhaps it is because I started taking Masters classes several years after graduating, but this book is highly technical without a lot of detail, which made it difficult and confusing to follow. The book has a nice old-school way of writing things and stating the problems, like Shakspear for engineers, which made reading it and understanding the information and the practice problems tough. Along those same lines, the book constantly refers to "Art XX" for information, which I finally figured out really meant chapters (your welcome for that tid bit). Long story short, if you're expecting a book that really helps walk you through the problems, uses language you're use to and asks for straight forward problem solutions, this isn't it and the Elasticity class, in general, might not be the class for you either.

Love This Book

I came across this book a few years ago and it was a sort of validation to me of what I had inherently known as a child, although I could not have put it to words as such. My family moved from Wisconsin when I was about six years old to a place just outside of a expanse of forest in Michigan. I spent most of my days from then within the trees and wild flower fields. I made friends with the plant life as well as some of the animals. I learned many lessons in that time.

I would return home late afternoons, telling of my adventures and my conversations with the trees, or other specific plants. To my parents it was all "make believe" but it was in fact very real to me. Since those days and into my adulthood I have cultivated many more relationships to plants and so coming across 'Plant Spirit Healing' was a beautiful thing for me.

I recommended this book to others regularly and it has given me a more in depth direction with what I had experienced as a child.

Illogical conclusions from uncited research studies and misinformation as proof to back up claims.

The writing style of the book is clear and easy to understand, but after fifty some-odd pages (was eady to walk away before that, but tried to give the author a chance), I just cannot read this book anymore or take any faith in what the later chapters cover.

The author takes some liberties in drawing conclusions from research studies and then equates them to a point she is trying to make as proof of her theories. The largest problem with this is that she draws her conclusions from studies that she never cites. I do understand that this is not an acedmic publication and in text citations are not necessary and can completely disrupt the flow of a book, but if research cases are going to be brought up as proof, the studies should at least be annotated in the references section of the book so readers can go verify the data being drawn from the studies. This would be especially helpful in a field that recieves little funding for research.

There are also things that are factually wrong about plants in the text, such as plants that release oxygen at night.
The conversion of light energy to sugar chains by splitting water and stripping the carbon from CO2, thereby releasing oxygen, does not occur at night. Plants continually consume oxygen for respiration and release CO2 (metabolic action in cells, not the incorrect use that refers to breathing. Correct uses for breathing would be respire, respired, respiring). There are some desert plants that have methods of capturing carbon at night so they can remain tightly sealed during the day to minimize water loss. The oxygen produced during the day is diffused into the plant's cells and is released at night, but most of this is released in a short period after the stomata are first opened, the rest of the oxygen diffuses out at such a slow rate that it is not very noticeable. Someone who's focus is plants should be aware of this and not using the oxygen production of plants at night, in the dark, as proof of plant's healing properties.

I agree that plants have some amazing healing and spiritual properties, but I cannot recommend this book as it is full of the type of information that causes those that refuse to take people seriously if they hold plants as a vital part of healing/healthy lifestyle, and look at those who turn to natural remedies as a first option as left wing nut jobs that have their heads so far up in the clouds that they are disconnected from reality. This is the type of book that further polarizes people by pushing those away who are skeptical and vindicating those who already agree but have there opinions based on myth and misinformation.

I never knew that the spirits of plants could be (and are) communicated with for healing. Pam Montgomery teaches how to welcome these loving, powerful spirits into your life and gives many rich examples from her years of experience. With most of the spiritual information out there focusing on other things, this informative and inspiring book is an important work.
