About the Author

Glenda Sluga is Professor of International History at the University of Sydney and Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow. She has published widely on the cultural history of international relations, the history of European nationalisms, gender history, and the history of identity and difference. Her publications include Internationalism in the Age of Nationalism (2013), The Nation, Psychology and International Politics (2006), The Problem of Trieste and the Italo-Yugoslav Border (2001), and Gendering European History (2000).

Carolyn James is Cassamarca Associate Professor in the School of Philosophical, Historical and International Studies at Monash University. She is the author of two books on the 15th-century Italian literary figure, Giovanni Sabadino degli Arienti (1996 and 2002), a complete English translation and analysis of the late fourteenth century letters of Margherita Datini (co-authored with Antonio Pagliaro, 2012).

Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages. Influenced by but ultimately independent of Buddhism, it took forms more various than the quietistic withdrawal of Laozi or the sudden enlightenment of the Chan Buddhists. On the basis of a new theoretical evaluation of mysticism, this study analyzes the relationship between philosophical and religious Taoism and between Buddhism and the native Chinese tradition. Kohn shows how the quietistic and socially oriented Daode jing was combined with the ecstatic and individualistic mysticism of the Zhuangzi, with immortality beliefs and practices, and with Buddhist insight meditation, mind analysis, and doctrines of karma and retribution. She goes on to demonstrate that Chinese mysticism, a complex synthesis by the late Six Dynasties, reached its zenith in the Tang, laying the foundations for later developments in the Song traditions of Inner Alchemy, Chan Buddhism, and Neo-Confucianism.

A crucial, balanced history of Taoism

This is an excellent history and treatment of the mystical tradition in Taoism up through the Tang period, written from a scholarly perspective. It gives the broad contours of the mystic experience and provides a survey of the literature. Specifically, it takes up the philosophical tradition (Tao Te Ching, Chuang Tzu, Lieh Tzu, etc.), the shamanic/ecstatic thread (Chuci, the "flight to the stars" etc.), Shangqing Taoism, Guo Xiang, the so-called "Hedonistic" tradition of Yang Zhu, Twofold Mystery, meditation, cross-currents with Buddhism, and much, much more. It also engages with some lesser-trodden but nonetheless important texts like 'The Scripture of the Western Ascension'. In my opinion, this is an indispensable book for anyone with an interest in Taoism. Aside from being extremely informative, its importance lies in its emphasis on the traditions listed above. So often, contemporary western books on Taoism vaunt internal alchemy, but this crucial history by Kohn reminds us that Taoism is so much more than that. Having said this, it might actually have been nice if she had in fact explored alchemy here too (it gets only a couple of brief mentions), and contextualized it alongside the more dominant aspects of Taoism that she does explore. However, one notes that Kohn later co-edited a volume on Internal Alchemy, which is also well worth the read. This, though, should be anyone's starting point for the history of Taoism.

Illuminating and Informative

This book is excellent for anyone with a serious interest in Chinese religions. It traces the development of Chinese mystical thought and practice from the earliest mystical and philosophical writings up through the Tang dynasty. In addition to its appeal to the scholarly community, anyone who has read and enjoyed some of the works of Chinese mysticism will find that this book provides a background in which to better understand what they have already read as well as exposing them to works they are not yet familiar with. All in all an excellent read.

Paul Tuohy has been working in application development on IBM midrange systems for 20 years. He has worked as IT manager for Kodak Ireland and technical director for Precision. He is currently CEO of ComCon, an AS/400 consulting company. For the past 11 years, he has been working as an instructor in the IBM Education Center in Dublin, Ireland, specializing in courses in programming and application development.

A Refreshing Look at Storytelling

Martin launches his book with the premise that thousands of stories are being written with "something lacking." The writer labors, but fails to grab the attention of the reader. In this book, he asks whether good storytelling can be "taught."

What he succeeds in doing, admirably, is not only describing some of the elements of good storytelling, but describing them in such a way as to model good storytelling in the very act of explaining it. In short, this book is wonderfully readable. I have stacks of books on my shelf, waiting to be read -- but when I picked up this one I wanted to keep going until I finished it.

Martin breaks down the topic of storytelling into three basic sections: Eccentricity, Details, and Surprises. Each section is satisfyingly complete, and packed with examples from favorite stories, classic novels, and some less well-known sources. Throughout the book, Martin weaves in a parable to keep the reader "hooked" on a growing story that serves as an example of the techniques being described.

The tips here aren't new or groundbreaking. We've all heard that "less is more," and that knowing what to leave out of your story is just as important as what to put in. What works here is the style in which the material is delivered. Too many books on "how to write a story" are dry, pedantic and dull -- delivered like lectures to a group of drowsy students. Others illustrate their text with examples drawn entirely from their own works -- which is great if you think their work is brilliant but not so great if you don't.

Thus, for a book on "how to write well" to work, it must itself be written well -- and in such a way as to encourage you to read it. In this, How to Write Your Best Story is a success, and an enjoyable addition to any fiction writer's bookshelf.

Great Book!

Phillip Martin has edited several of my books, so I know that he is a great editor. Now, having read How to Write Your Best Story, I can say that he is a great writer, too.

This is a gem of a book--a must read for anyone who has written or wishes to craft the "best story" possible. Toward the end of the book, Phillip refers to a work by nature writer Barry Lopez, who define isumataq, the Inuit word for "storyteller," as follows: "the person who creates the atmosphere in which wisdom reveals itself."

This summarizes the tone and insight of this wonderful little book. It is just one of the many words of wisdom in which Phillip Martin weaves a story about how to better write and simply enjoy our own stories.

If you're like me, someone wanting to improve upon your leadership skills, yet you work for a boss that shows little to no interest in your professional career, this book is definitely the book for you. It separates myths from reality with Bruce's upfront step by step of setting the foundation for your forthright management relationship. He is candid and upfront that managing is not simple nor easy and that improving upon any relationship won't happen overnight. Dawn vs. Mary Anne

Dawn and Mary Anne are best friends... So they're SURE that being stepsisters will be fun.

They were wrong.

For one thing, Dawn and her mother are vegetarians, and Mary Anne and her father eat meat a lot. For another, before Mary Anne and her father moved in, it was common to find towels carefully put away... in the silverware drawer. And at Mary Anne's house, her father put his shirts in the closet alphabetically by color: Blue, brown, gray, red, white; like that.

As a side plot, Dawn and Mary Anne's friend Mallory Pike, who has SEVEN brothers and sisters, gets her SECOND case of chicken pox... Then three of her brothers get pnemonia... Then her other brother breaks his finger... Then one of her sisters sprains an ankle... Then her other sisters get bronchitis (I think)... Finally, her parents get injuries when they're playing tennis.

Will Dawn and Mary Anne ever speak to each other again? Will the Pike Plauque end? Read this book and find out!

THE ODD COUPLE

This is a nicely written story about the differences in personalities and reinforces that old adage about not knowing someone until you live with them. Mary-Anne's dad marries creepy Dawn's mother. They are polar opposites -- he's fastidious and fussy, like Felix Unger whereas she is casual and cavalier, like Oscar Madison. I thought some of her misplaced items were actually funny, e.g. socks in the refrigerator and the like.
Mary-Anne has to contend with the pushy, overbearing Dawn. (Poor kid)! She is a gentle, somewhat naive girl who has a good heart and would not even so much as swat a mosquito. Dawn, on the other hand would walk over her own brother and mother in a second. She is brash and inconsiderate and in general is a brat. The parents each support the step child in the interest of furthering family harmony and luckily it all gets resolved in the end. Each girl gets her own room and luckily the house was big enough to provide this nice solution.

Can't they be friends again?

When mary anne's father and Dawn's mother were married, Mary Anne And Dawn used to be Best Friends but now they are rivals. Mary Anne and Dawn are getting into a fight here. Jeff tries to stay out of it. But how will Mary Anne and Dawn be friends?

At the end of the book, There is a letter explaining to you why it is called "Dawn's Wicked Stepsister". Just guess that maybe that she has a stepsister and they also get into a fight

After the letter, There is a notebook page that explains when did you read it, when did you finish.....

After that, there is special photos about Dawn showing her when she was a baby, They also show her having a spooky mystery at their old farmhouse.

About the Author
Tony attended Noyes Elementary School in Evanston, Illinois, from kindergarten to second grade (1967–69). He then moved to the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago, where he attended St. Brendan's Catholic School and, upon graduation, attended Quigley Prep Seminary South. After graduation, Tony attended the University of Illinois Champaign–Urbana. In 1983, he graduated with a BS in psychology. The dynamic between black and white in this country, as well as the six inhabited continents he has visited, has always fascinated him. He thought of the things we say (or don't say) to one another, as well as the interactions in families of “mixed” heritage. Months after graduating from the U of I, Tony joined the US Navy, serving as a submariner and, later on, officer onboard a destroyer during the US involvement in the first Persian Gulf War. After nine and a half years in the navy, he became a nationally certified licensed nutritional counselor, a caregiver for the developmentally disabled, and a doctor of naprapathic medicine (Naprapath). His focus now is on manual therapy and care of the developmentally disabled. In addition to this book, he has written three books of poetry-one with his son Brian, Father and Son: a Connection through Poetry. Tony definitely believes that words and dialogue are a more efficient vehicle for change than bullets and weapons. He remains hopeful for the sake of his grandson and future generations.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. It depicts a man's struggle between, race, coming of age and figuring out what decisions were most important for his life. It's often very difficult to navigate the many decisions that life comes with. This book's title has a double meaning. It was a well written personal story of a man and his family. It was inspiring and thought provoking. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Professor Erman is currently professor of science and engineering at Koc University. He worked in the research group of Prof. P.J. Flory at Stanford University and IBM Research, San Jose, at various intervals between 1976-1985. His scientific collaborations include the Max-Planck Institute fur Polymerforschung in Mainz, and ESPCI, Laboratoire de Physico-Chimie Structurale et Macromoleculaire, Paris. He has been collaborating with Prof. J.E. Mark at Cincinnati University on rubber elasticity since 1987. He has over 200 scientific papers in refereed journals, 2 books and 2 edited books. Burak Erman is a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. He served on the Science Board of TUBITAK, editorial board of Computational Polymer Science and Polymer Gels and Networks. He received the 1991 Simavi Science Award, the 1991 TUBITAK Science Award and the 2007 American Chemical Society Whitby Award. His current research interests are focused on the application of the theory of elastomeric networks to predict protein function, and on polymer and protein physics and engineering, both dynamics and statics and experiment and theory, including computer simulations.

Dr. Roland is head of the Polymer Physics Section in the Chemistry Division at the Naval Research Laboratory. After earning his doctorate in chemistry at Pennsylvania State University, he worked as a researcher at The Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. before joining NRL in 1986. He has over 370 peer-reviewed publications and holds 13 patents. Roland has won various awards for his research, including the Sparks-Thomas and Melvin Mooney Awards from the American Chemical Society and the Pure Science Award from the NRL Edison Chapter of Sigma Xi. He has served in editorial and advisory capacities on several journals, including technical editor of Rubber Chemistry & Technology. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals, and Mining (UK).
