About the Author

Carrie L. Buist is an Assistant Professor of Criminology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Her research interests include Queer issues in criminology and criminal justice, media and crime, policing, feminism, and the sociology of pop culture. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals and served as co-editor for Critical Criminology: An International Journal’s special edition on Queer(ing) Criminology.

Emily Lenning is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Fayetteville State University. Her publications cover a diverse range of topics, from state-sanctioned violence against women to creative advances in pedagogy. Her accomplishments in and out of the classroom have been recognized by several awards, including the North Carolina Criminal Justice Association’s Margaret Lang Willis Outstanding Criminal Justice Educator Award and the American Society of Criminology Division on Women & Crime’s New Scholar Award.

Notwithstanding your opinion about Ayn Rand, the ideas in this book give one a clear understanding how reason figures in our lives.
Notwithstanding you opinion about how emotion can affect the application of reason in solving problems, Ayn Rand's epistemology is the gold standard in understanding the role of reason.
I give the book to the children in my extended family when they reach the milestone of passing from adolescence to adulthood.

Its thesis are presented on a scale of importance to human living, not of detached academic abstraction - although THAT IS an important and necessary process in anything to be considered a "real" science. "Existence exists" is presented plainly as an Aristotelian "indemonstrable First Principle" as something simply self-evident - which it is - but without the explanation of how controversial it is in contemporary thinking which does not at all - for the most part - understand what an "axiom" is supposed to be.

Absolutely Exceptional

Thought may be merely philosophical or it may be true philosophy, in a rigorous and disciplined sense. Anyone who has read Ayn Rand’s masterpieces, “Atlas Shrugged” and “The Fountainhead,” is inclined to think it is the latter of these; but it is in this work, “Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology” in which one sees, in classic philosophic expositional form, the thoroughgoing rigor of her thought. Rand’s clarity in prose and precise, simple, yet elegant style make for a relatively easily digested set of ideas. I say “relatively” because the subject matter is by no means extraordinarily easy to handle to the typical reader of Rand’s novels –and this is perhaps why Rand has been so influential, having been capable of canalizing her ideas into the genre of fiction. However, for those with any kind of exposure to proper philosophy will find the ideas presented amazingly clear and straightforward. The average reader, in the end, with some reasonable amount of effort, should be able to get a handle of this works central and most prominent parcels of ideas. The appendix of discursive intercourse should further assimilation of Rands points presented in the main body of the text. The value in doing this, so far as the layperson is concerned, is that this work provides the groundwork for the entire Objectivist philosophy, and it provides immediate insight into Rand’s position on each of the major branches of philosophy. In short, her idea is that language and existence has been artificially separated by philosophers, as she employs with appropriate snarkiness phrases like “floating terms.”

Peikoff’s supplement is amazingly well chosen and, in my opinion, a necessary addition to Rand’s work. For the philosophically trained pupil and expert, I find it inconceivable that this text could be presented without it. The article that Peikoff supplies is on the analytic-synthetic divide, and he employs Rand’s theory to show why exactly this is an erroneously contrived dichotomy. Without going into any detail, the Rand text and Peikoff supplement provides a response to a long tradition of post-Kantians and “mini-Kantians” (e.g., pragmatists and logical positivists); and this, in itself, should make the work interesting enough for students of philosophy and philosophers to have a peek, if not study it thoroughly. The text, as a whole, is so rich and thought provoking, and so compelling, that I feel it is among the more important works in epistemology ever written.

A final word about the status of this book as an “introduction,” since I have read complaints in reviews elsewhere. This book is not an introduction, in the sense of remediality and oversimplification; that is, it is not a reworking of a set of ideas so as to make them more readily available. It is an introduction in the sense that Rand realized that her system of epistemology is incomplete, requiring a resolution to the problem of induction, etc. Attempts toward this end can be found in Peikoff’s lectures, “Induction in Philosophy and Physics,” Peikoff’s book, “DIM Hypothesis,” and David Harriman’s “The Logical Leap: Induction in Physics.” In other words, Rand was fully aware that her epistemological framework described well concept formation, but similarly acknowledged that this didn’t explain how universal generalization is possible from particulars, as it is done in the physical sciences. It is in this regard, awaiting a fuller and complete epistemology, that Rand entitled the work an “introduction.”

A vision for high-trust and high performance organization

"Our work on this topic has been inspired primarily by personal consulting experiences over many years...Ten years ago, these experiences confirmed the teachings of W.Edwards Deming and others involved with continuous quality improvement. Deming asserted in his fourteen obligations of managment that quality was impossible where people are afraid to tell the truth...Besides Dming, other voices strongly reinforce the need to understand the dynamics and effects of fear. Chris Argyris's extensive body of work clarifies how invisible and self-reinforcing miscommunication due to fear can be. Peter Senge's explorations of systems thinking illuminate its far-reaching effects. Both of these thinkers underscore the need to understand the negative assumptions about people that keep fear in place. Peter Block's works on empowerment and stewardship demand a wholesale rethinking of the concepts of management and leadership as a way to escape thses destructive beliefs. Most recently, Thomas Stewart's examination of the rapidly emerging value of intellectual capital demands that even more attention be paid to reducing fear and building trust" (from the Preface).
In this context, Kathleen D.Ryan and Daniel K.Oestreich, with the following core questions, illustrate some important elements of the trust-fear continuum. They say that if your answers to these questions are all 'yes,' your workplace is clearly fear-based:
* Do a high proportion of people in your organization frequently hesitate to speak up about certain issues?
* Does a fear of speaking up exist at many levels in your organization?
* Are people in your workplace associating managers and supervisors with th presence of fear?
* Are leaders in your organization exhibiting behavior that causes employees to be afraid?
* Are people reacting with strong emotions to a perceived environment of fear?
* Is fear having an impact on work and how it is getting done?
Thus, by describing the following 'core behaviors,' they define the vision of a high-trust workplace: *mutual helpfulness and understanding, *serving as a reality check for one another, *providing feedback for one another, on strengths as well as areas that need improvement, *influencing each other's ideas and decisions; willingness to be influenced, *humor; enjoyment of each other's company, *creative, synergistic problem solving where the results are greater than the sum of the parts, *respect for different backgrounds and talents; reliance on one another's expertise to ensure the best results, *willingness and ability to work through conflicts and disagreements, *common commitment to the same goal; commitment to one another's success, *a high level of rapport and honesty with one another, *straightforward communication.
They argue that the vision of a high-trust workplace can draw people naturally away from the cycle of fear and mistrust toward a new set of possibilities for better workplace relationships, and hence high-performance organization.

Excellent resource for OD, HR and all managers

This is one of my all-time favorite management/OD books. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in learning how to improve manager-employee relationships, trust, and communication in organizations. I think it should be on the bookshelf of every Organization Development specialist, Human Resource manager, executive coach, and leadership trainer. It contains useful, thoughtful, and often unique advice for managers, team members, trainers, and anyone else interested in reducing the climate of fear in their workplace. Some of the ideas translate well to personal and family relationships too.
Fear is extremely damaging to organizations. It can harm trust, communication, quality, knowledge sharing, cooperation, innovation, retention, and overall organization effectiveness. Whether you are interested in improving morale, communication, and performance company-wide, or you just need to improve your relationship with one person, you'll find something useful here. This is not just the same old recycled advice you'll see in leadership books. Some of the ideas will be familiar to experienced people in the field, but the authors expand them and put them into a new perspective based on their work. They contribute many new ideas and examples that you won't find elsewhere.

Portions of the book are particularly helpful for well-intentioned managers who just don't understand why people don't fully trust them. If you're not getting the level of communication, ideas, and candor needed to bring your organization to the next level, fear may be the problem. If you hear a manager say, "I don't know why they didn't tell me sooner," give him or her this book. Most of us don't realize all the little things we do to discourage good communication.
My favorite concepts in this book include the cycle of mistrust and undiscussables. The cycle of mistrust provides a great understanding of how our perceptions and assumptions influence the behavior of other people. It's a great model for leadership, teambuilding and communication workshops. You'll be sure to recognize a few "undiscussables" in your own workplace. An undiscussable might be a sensitive issue that employees whisper about to one another, but not with those who might have the power to do something about it. It's just too risky to speak up. Management might not learn about it until they experience the shock of scathing comments in an anonymous employee survey, or they hear about it from someone in another company! You can prevent this from happening by driving fear out of the workplace and by creating an environment that makes it easier for people to speak up in the first place.

Great Lessons

An absolute great read that positively impacted me as a trader, and most importantly, it had a huge impact for me on a personal level. The lessons in the book presented themselves as advice and inspiration from legendary coaches from the past as they spoke to a struggling college football coach. I thought the material was well written and presented in a way that everyone will be able to relate too.

Loved Think Like a Warrior!

I loved this book! I'm a huge fan of self help books...and sports, so this is the perfect combination.

The story is highly entertaining and never gets boring or overwrought. The messages from each coach are powerful and clear. Not only does this book inspire me to become a stronger man, but it also taught me things about the individual coaches I didn't know. I wish I could have taken McNeely's place a couple times to have a beer with these coaching greats.

It's such a fun read and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to find their inner self!
