About the Author
Daniel J. Siegel, MD is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and completed his postgraduate medical education at UCLA with training in pediatrics and child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. He is currently a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, founding co-director of UCLA’s Mindful Awareness Research Center, founding co-investigator at the UCLA Center for Culture, Brain and Development, and executive director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational center devoted to promoting insight, compassion, and empathy in individuals, families, institutions, and communities. Dr. Siegel’s psychotherapy practice spans thirty years, and he has published extensively for the professional audience. He serves as the Founding Editor for theNorton Professional Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology which includes over three dozen textbooks. Profound! Life-changing!

Wonderful sweet romance

This is a wonderfully sweet small town romance and the first book I have read by this author. It definitely won't be my last. Ms. McCoy has a great writing style and her characters are well developed and interesting. Adeline and Sinclair are both involved in family commitments. Adeline is having to run the family chocolate store while her father recuperates from an injury. Try as she might she can't get the fudge her family is so well known for exactly right. Sinclair is back in Benevolence helping is brother clear out and clean up the old family home. His relationship with his father was never good and he had never planned to return but when his brother called what could he do. The attraction between these two is strong and the sweet relationship that develops between them is wonderful.

This is a book I would definitely recommend.

Shirlee McCoy has written beautiful book, that will touch your heart.

Sweet Haven, a four-star romance read is simply Sweet. Written by Shirley McCoy, is small town romance has no violence, and besides some kissing there is not sex scenes. This story is written in alternating person narration and you are truly able to know both main characters.

Adeline, never left her small town of Benevolence, Washington like her sisters had. Her grandfather is hospitalized and she is taking over his business while he heals, the family store called Chocolate Haven which is very well known for its amazing fudge. Her adorable dog Tiny, her small home, and guarding her heart after Adam tore it apart is the life Addie wants. Her excitement of her life is Tiny getting out and causing trouble all over town, and Addie is okay with that. But now there is someone now renting her grandfather’s apartment, and Addie can't stop thinking of him. Sinclair is returning home, to the town he escaped from to help his brother restore his home for his brother’s wife who is expecting a child. Sinclair wants to get the house done and out of the town that pitied him all his life, as the poor Jefferson boy whose fathers drinking killed his mother and his himself. Quickly Sinclair is learning this small town holds many buildings needing to be restored, learning his brother isn't the lazy guy he thought he was, and learning that Addie isn't the little red head girl he remembers. The chemistry Sinclair and Addie have is a page turner, but Sinclair must find a way to break down the walls Addie has built around her heart.

This small town love story is sweet and cute. The only thing I wish is that we had one scene with Addie and Sinclair together sexually, as each time they are together, you felt the passion and attraction they both felt for each other. the sisters make a brief appearance in the book as well as Addie's mother. I am very excited to read the rest of the series, and really hope Addie's mom gets her book, she deserves her happy ending. Shirlee McCoy has written beautiful book, that will touch your heart.

4 Strong stars for an enjoyable romance read.

Love served with chocolate is at the heart of Sweet Haven by Shirlee McCoy. New series with a new town, Benevolence, Washington. Addie and Sinclair have come back to the town to help family members. I loved how their relationship progressed normally with an added bit of suspense ingredient. I thought this was truly a come home to love story.

Since this is the first in the series, there is the image building of the town. Then a whole cast of town people along with several strong supporting characters. It is all done so that it fits nicely into getting to know Addie and Sinclair.

The main characters, Addie and Sinclair are characters to love even with their flaws. Not glancing flaws but not perfect either. I enjoyed the normalcy of these two, thinking that they bring out the best in each other. I hope to stay up to date with them in more of this delightful new series.

JOHN DUCKITT is a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. His primary research interests are in topics such as prejudice, racism, discrimination, and intergroup conflict, on which he has contributed a number of articles to international journals. He was also a contributor to the Ninth Mental Measurements Yearbook and serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals.

Nathan Wallace's COM/DCOM Blue Book provides an excellent guide to the Component Object Model (COM) development using today's Microsoft tools, from the Active Template Library (ATL) and Microsoft Foundation Classes (MFC) in Visual C++ to Visual Basic and Visual J++. Alternating chapters in this book feature either tools-based programming exercises (using ATL, MFC, VB, and Visual J++) or explanations of the technical details underlying COM's many attributes and functions.

After showing off basic COM projects, the author presents a short history of COM and its elemental pieces such as interfaces, reference counting, containment, and aggregation. The book also spotlights coding with object linking and embedding (OLE) Automation, including an early example of a simple COM server for encrypting string data, a sample that's just right for demonstrating essential COM principles.

COM/DCOM then looks at ActiveX controls; shows off properties (and property pages), event handling, and persistence; and discusses distributed COM (DCOM) with examples that show how to run COM servers from remote clients.

The best sections of the book cover the COM Variant data-type, Strings (or BSTRs), and the SAFEARRAY data type in all four programming environments. The book does a fine job of explaining these essential COM topics. Later sections glance at Internet programming (with ASP and dynamic HTML [DHTML] support in each tool). More in-depth coverage of Microsoft Transaction Server (MTS) comes at the end of the book (though the final chapter repeats whole paragraphs from an earlier section verbatim--obviously an editorial glitch).

An impulse buy victim

Yet another example of how dangerous it is to impulse buy a computer book at a bookstore based on it's potential.
It's a great concept, but the depth of the errors and inconsistency in the language make it clear much of the content is surface level regurgation and not the teaching of someone who really gets it. There is much more wrong here than typos and cut and paste oversights; some of the errors are fundamental, and grievously misleading. Furthermore, I've tried to contact the publisher about corrections or explanations of specific issues and gotten no response.
The bright side is you will actually learn something as you struggle to understand how to make the examples work. It was painfull but I made progress using MSDN info and ATL source. I've also formed plenty of questions that I'm sure I'll now better apreciate expert answers for.
Beware, don't let it's potential suck you in. It took me way to long to give up on this book.
Other lessons learned:
1) Resist the bookstore computer book section, the odds are worse than the lotery. 2) Look for author's that stand behind their work with a personal email address for comments, questions, and suggestions. 3) Be extra suspicious of this publisher.

Love the concept but the errata are ridiculous.

I like the writing style, and I really like the ambitious attempt to touch on the entire spectrum from basic COM to MTS, in each of ATL, MFC, VB, and Java. But, this book is riddled with errors. I fought my way through the examples up to chapter 5, correcting things which didn't work as described in the book by trial and error, and by comparing with the supplied CD (which is often considerably different from the printed code). In chapter 5 this just got too ugly, and even when I tried to resolve it by using the examples from the CD, one of those had a hard coded absolute path based on the author's E: drive and wouldn't compile! Coriolis's claims in the intro to "guarantee several important qualities ... technical accuracy ... several editing and proofreading passes" are laughable in hindsight. What could have been a great book is severely blemished by the level of frustration it has incurred.

Riddled with errors in examples

After completing the first chapter's examples, I am greatly dissappointed in this book. The statement from the publisher on technical accuracy appears to be an all out lie. References to the same variable in code mysteriously change names from one code chunk to the next. The keyword 'interface' is shown as 'Interface' in the code, although no reference to the necessary macro is made. (page 20) One portion of the book is obviously a cut and pasted from another portion without the content being updated correctly for the current context!!! (page 17, step 11) In other words, as written, the examples do not compile and the steps involved are not explained correctly. If this continues in the following chapters, I will be seeking a refund on this one. Coriolis Technology was supposedly "founded to create a very elite group of books." Better luck next time guys.

Good advice on a wide variety of writing related topics

This book is a compilation of previously published articles and covers a wide variety of topics such as: book proposals, technical writing, setting fees, speaking etc.

I found a great many golden nuggets of information in these pages. I'd recommend this book for all those who would like to get a good taste of the breadth of Bob's wisdom.

As others have mentioned, the binding is not the best, but I was gentle with the book while reading it, and didn't have any pages fall out. Even with the binding issue, I consider this a worthwhile investment.

Terribly out of date

Terribly out of date. So much of this book clearly doesn't apply to the world of 2016. I'm not trying to trash the original concepts that were great in their own time, but now are grossly out of date. I'm just trying to warn and let people know what to expect.

About two hundreds pages could be cut from this book and it would be up to date.

Trojan Records started life in 1967 as an offshoot of Chris Blackwell's Island Records. By 1969 it had hit its stride, and for the next six years Trojan ruled the reggae roost, with over 30 charted hits. Luminaries like Gregory Isaacs, Inner Circle, and Dennis Brown were introduced by Trojan, and Bob Marley’s first UK album, Soul Rebels, was issued on the label. Trojan also issued the breakthrough Tighten Up compilations. What fans could not know were the cutthroat politics, cultural divisions, racism, and entrepreneurial pressures that drove the label’s success and ensured its demise. For hardcore enthusiasts only

Trojan Records was reggae's Motown. It's back catalog is vital listening. For the uninitiated, putting down your dollars for one of their great compilations, which usually contain extensive liner notes, would probably be a better place to start. YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK is more or less a history of the inner workings of the Trojan Records label and staff rather than a document of the artists that it promoted so well. While the story is interesting, and it's a story you won't get anywhere else, the book would have been well served to spend more time discussing the music rather than the music business. The book is 300 pages long but the story ends about halfway through. The second half of the book is merely a printed catalog of all Trojan releases to date (which fills 150 pages!) and underlines the fact that YOUNG, GIFTED & BLACK was meant for avid collectors only. Too bad they couldn't have filled those last 150 pages with more tales of Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker, or the Maytals as all of theses artist are only cited in passing in the story. The CD which accompanies the book is great but it can be purchased seperately.

A Sensational Book With A Ground-Breaking & Detailed Discography

I've contributed large numbers of entries to the UK's 1400-page "Record Collector Price Guide 2008" - and to many of it's previous issues - and have worked in the rare record mail-order business for 'too' many years. Why do I say all this - because I can tell you that it's REGGAE MUSIC - and especially information about it 7" singles - that is so scarce, hard-to-find and problematic. Details are always sketchy. Sure, most of the Island Records and later Virgin Label Reggae stuff is now listed and documented, but you go off-the-beaten track a little bit and it's a whole different ballgame. Usually produced on a shoestring, pressed up as one-off pressings, then sold off vans to shops in the city that specialized in that music...98% of it never charted in the regular pop charts and is therefore something of a mystery. I've found that 'hard' info about reggae (LPs or 7"s) is in the mitts of a handful of dedicated collectors and dedicated shop sources (like the now sadly defunct and brilliant "Daddy Kool" in Berwick Street in London) and the general public never gets a shoe in on what's what. Which is why this book is such an absolute sensation.

After the main story of Trojan Records itself (which is a fantastic read), Pages 119 to 156 give you all the supplementary stuff - Lists of R&B, Motown and Pop Covers the label did, Musicland & Muzic City shops stocking Trojan from their incorporation in 1963 to their closure in 1976, pages of detailed Suggested Listening, then Suggested Reading, the Sources used to compile it all, Profiles of all labels under the Trojan umbrella, and then - wait for it - a discography that stretches from page 157 to 305! The detail and accuracy is astonishing and in many cases - first time info into the public domain.

It should also be noted that while the TROJAN name and label is well known, its subsidiary labels are not. The discography includes both singles & LPs of the following labels for the first time:
Amalgamated, Attack, Big, Big Shot, Black Swan, Blue Cat, Bread, Clandisc, Doctor Bird, Down Town, Duke, Duke Reid, Dynamic, Explosion, Gayfeet, GC, GPW, Grape, Green Door, Harry J, High Note, Horse, Hot Rod, Jackpot, J-Dan, Joe, JJ, Jump-Up, Moodisc, Pressure Beat, Pyramid, Q, Randy's, Smash, Song Bird, Spinning Wheel, Summit, Techniques, Treasure Isle, Trojan and Upsetter. Wow!

As if this isn't good enough, there's a superlative 12-track CD attached to the inside of the front sleeve with both rare and well known Trojan titles - its track list is:

I can't praise this book enough and its researchers extraordinary work. Stunning stuff and something I'll be dipping into for years to come.

I dragged out my 8 "Tighten Up" album compilations and have been petting them and playing them like a favourite child ever since!

A nice touch also is that there’s a set of 16 full-sized colour plates inset at the centre - photos of Bob & Marcia from 1970 (the hit and title of the book - "Young, Gifted & Black"), trade adverts for Symarip's "Skinhead Moonstomp" and Judge Dread's "Big 8", a cool-looking Toots & The Maytals standing by the railings as they contemplate "Funky Kingston", an LP advert from December 1971 for a whole range of releases, publicity photos of Bob Andy, John Holt, The Dynamites (Clancy Eccles' studio band) as well as several label bags and 7” single variations.

It should also be noted that while the TROJAN name and label is well known, its subsidiary labels are not. The discography includes both singles & LPs of the following labels for the first time:

Christian Ministry - Ouside the Box

Richard Mull candidly relates the story of how God broke into his very natural existence in a supernatural way. "The Jesus Training Manual" is made up of two parts: Mull's personal encounter with God and the Biblical foundations for experiencing the God of the Bible, hearing His voice, walking in His authority and power, and finding His will for your life.

Mull advocates that God still works in the realm of the miraculous, that demons are real and we can know how to deal with them. He gives Biblical principles and truths about the Kingdom of God, healing, spiritual battles, and our spiritual armor for fighting those battles.

I found the study questions at the end of each chapter practical, probing, and heart searching, personally opening up the possibility of considering new perspectives on the meaning of discipleship and experiencing Christ's fullness in my walk with Him. These exercises become a vital core to the training manual especially when opportunities are available to discuss in a group or classroom situation along with the supporting material provided in the book's narrative.

Mull's unique story is one of allowing his character to be shaped and reshaped as the result his perseverance in praying to become a transformer of lives through a ministry to individuals tormented by fear, anxiety, depression, and negative thinking.

Richard is convinced that when we limit God we are also limiting the extent of our experience with Him. He recaps the price of radically pursuing God. You can expect: rejection from your peers, you will be forced to overcome your skepticism; rethink your theological hang ups, and religious constraints to stand on Biblical principles alone.

Richard is articulate. His writing is compelling, convincing and convicting. The book is packed with stories of revival, restoration and revolution, as well as the practical lessons Jesus taught His twelve disciples through supernatural experiences of salvation, healing, and miracles.

Living a Life of Miracles, Signs and Wonders

This author (although unknown before to me) has captured in a beautiful and loving manner, in his writings, one of the best books to serve as a training manual for each Christian to learn, grow and serve in the miracles, signs and wonders of our Lord.
Have you thought about it? How many sermons, Bible studies, small group meetings have addressed the over 30 miracles recorded in the gospels for each of us to learn how to apply what Jesus was and is teaching us in His miracles? Probably not too many!
The author discusses in 9 chapters his person encounter with God, and then in 7 more chapters he provides for us the biblical foundations to help us learn what our life today should be as we follow Jesus.
This is a great book and one to be used as a guide with the Bible for teachings as we all learn to operate in the miracles, signs and wonders of our Lord. Read and grow in the life of our Lord His son Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Being Discipled by Jesus

Richard Mull reminds me of the Apostle Paul. Richard, the author was educated in seminary had a position as a youth pastor. Everything was going great until God no longer fit the box of Richard's theology. Richard knew how to make programs, sermons, and counsel people. He did not understand what it meant or how to disciple people. He also did not believe that God healed today or did signs and miracles. Similarly to Paul, Richard had his experience with God. This was done through another man who was sent by God to destroy his theological box. Richard then spent time re-examining the Scriptures for himself to see what they revealed. It changed the way he understood Scripture. The first part of the book is Richard's journey from god shattering his theological box to his current understanding of God. The second half of the book is how this new understanding has healed and set people free. Richard does not just want to make Christians, but disciples of Jesus who can do the same things that Jesus and His disciples did. Jesus was able to train the 12 and the 72 to do the same things He did. Would you like to walk in the same power as Jesus did? Do you want to be discipled by Jesus? Open your hearts and minds to what Richard has to offer. Check the Scriptures to see if what he says is true as you read the book. you could be a disciple of Jesus and do the same things that He has done in greater measure. Are you willing to open yourself?
