A Great Rock and Roll Read!

Growing up Annie Slade had a pretty great life. Her father is Colter Slade, lead singer of the famous rock band "Slayed." Annie grew up around music so naturally it felt right to start a band. The band included her sister Ella, her cousin Caleb, Chad, and her best friend Aston. They called themselves by "Staked" and they are really good! Soon they get their big break and big things start happening. Annie is thrilled but can't seem to enjoy it. She struggles with her inner demons and with it comes rage and violent outbursts. On top of that Aston is acting different. The guy she knew as her best friend is suddenly much more. While Annie takes her own rock and roll journey, she goes through many ups and downs. Can she handle all the fame and a possible love life or will she let her demons win?
I love reading about rock and roll bands. I love music so naturally this book appealed to me. The beginning was a little slow for me but as the story progressed, I found I couldn't put it down. The author did a great job of describing certain events and lifestyle that I felt I was part of this close knit family and band. The characters were also great. However Annie's character took some time to like. Most of the time she came across bratty and selfish, that I wanted to slap her! By the end of the book though I was rooting for her. I loved Ella's character and hope she will get her own book! This book does contain mature content. This was a great read and I recommend checking it out. I give this 4 stars!

K.E. Osborn gave us the rock group Slayed with her Rock God series and now we get Stalked with the Next Generation series. Book one features the spoiled brat Annie Slade and all of her emotional baggage. This review may contain spoilers for the Rock God series.
Annie Slade is the adopted daughter of Colt and Lia Slade. Her adopted sister Ella and cousins make up the band Stalker. Annie is a natural on the guitar just like her dad, however knows that's not where her talent came from since he really isn't her dad. There lies the crux of all of Annie's emotional problems, making her a total nightmare.
Like some stars, Annie wants to make the music without the fame part, that she can do without. She doesn't like that her every move has to be calculated as to not be misconstrued by the media. Some days is seems that her famous father cares about the media more than her and that just makes Annie want to do bad things.
This girl is a mess. She feels that nobody can love her since her real mother didn't even want her, so she constantly lashes out. I had a hard time feeling sorry for her because she was such an attention hog. Offered help time and time again, Annie refuses it and when she finally gets what she thinks she wants, it goes to hell in a hand basket pretty quickly.
I didn't like Annie from the first chapter and she didn't end up growing on me at all. Through out the book I felt that she was nothing but a b-word and didn't necessarily redeem herself by the end in my opinion. I did like that K.E. Osborn made a little glossary of UK English terms, as well as who was who in both bands. Very clever.

3.5 Electric Guitars for Rock Solid

I remember reading the two books in the Rock Gods series earlier this year, and had vague memories of them when i reread my reviews. I have been trying to clean some of my older books off my KU account, and this one was on there. As I read this one I remembered more and more of the original series, which really was quite good. I remember thinking, perhaps even writing, that I wasn't in much of a hurry to read about their kids being in a band. Maybe I didn't wait long enough, but I had a hard time getting into this (very long) first book in The Next Generation Series. I know there are many books in this series now, and I will probably eventually get to them all, but I am in no hurry to do so. My TBR is so long that I just don't have much desire to binge on a series - even ones I have read one or two books of and have absolutely loved. So one that I just can't seem to get very invested in will get pushed further down. But at the same time, it wasn't so bad that I am ready to write it off completely. The next book in the series focuses on Caleb, and though I LOATHED his mother when we first met them, I am quite curious about him, and his pixie. But I have thoroughly digressed away from the book at hand.
If you read The Rock Gods series, you will certainly remember Colt and Lia, and probably remember that a freak accident when Lia was chased by fans left them unable to have kids of their own. Fast forward however many years later as this begins, and the have adopted 2 girls, Annie and Ella, who are now teens or tweens, and have formed a band with the kids of the other members of Slayed. They call their band Staked, and this is mostly Annie's story, with large doses of Ashton, who is the son of Johnny and Anna. We find out that Annie was adopted when she was 6 months old (and Ella about a year after that, I think as a newborn.) Anyway, Annie doesn't remeber a time before Ella was part of their family, and Ashton doesn't remember a time he wasn't somewhat in love with Annie. She sees Ashton as her best friend, and freaks out when he tries to kiss her on her 16th birthday. The drama ensues full force after that, for the next 400 and some pages. If you like plenty of drama, some completely over the top, and some she brought on herself, and some her parents should have forseen, don't even finish this review - get started reading.
Maybe because I am a mom of teenagers, I just couldn't quite relate to a lot if the teenage/first love/first heartbreak/misc coming of age drama. But then again, I am kind of reliving it with kids that age. And I do like many books with this age group, but somehow I just never did get to the point I could relate to Annie. I had a lot of sympathy for her parents, especially her mom, but I just couldn't seem to get there with Annie. I am still giving the book 3.5 stars though (guitars as I run a rock romance blog) because a lot of Annie's family and friends caught my attention and left me wanting more of them. I wanted to feel some kind of connection with Annie, but I just couldn't get there. Besides having out of control (even for a teenage girl) anger issues, being completely self centered (again, even for a teenage girl) and getting written into completely over the top situations, I did want to like her. She did have moments where she realized her anger wasn't like others, and got her into stupid amounts of trouble and hurting those she loved, and moments when she would realize how much she was neglecting what those closest to her (particularly her sister) were going through while she was so over obsessed with being adopted. I pride myself on not giving spoilers, and I honestly think (and hope) I am staying on my side of that line, but I have to say, I have a hard time Colt and Lia wouldn't have gotten her a therapist early on. Simply because she knew she was adopted could have been enough reason. Or watching her angry outbursts hurting herself and everyone around her. But this isn't real life, and I understand that she needed to be the way she was for the dramas that ensued. Poor thing, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Brittney Spears and Miley Cyrus combined haven't been through all the crap poor Annie faces in this one book. That may have been another part of my trouble connecting.
I honestly hate giving negative reviews, and again, I didn't hate this, and do plan to, someday, read the rest of the series. Honestly, I am interested enough in the next storyline, it may not be terribly long. From the synopsis, I am thinking it could probably be read as a stand alone, but I am not really sure. I would also highly recommend reading The Rock Gods Series before any of these. It probably won't keep you from understanding the storyline, but I guarantee it will help immensely with some of the background stuff, and things from the past that are mentioned fairly regularly.
For mature audiences only for some fairly explicit sexual situations, some drug and alcohol use, some violence, a kidnapping. I hate to even mention this, but this book could really be helped by another run through by an editor. I try to be understanding of a few misspellings, wrong tenses, other grammatical errors, and honestly I didn't hold it against the book in rating it, but they were noticable enough (as in taking me out of the story to reread and decipher) and frequent enough that I felt the need to mention it. I really want to recommend this one, but I am having a hard time finding the right audience to recommend it to. Maybe after I read further in the series I will find it easier, and I will revise this review. And if the author should decide to re-edit it, I would be very willing to reread and revise my review. I have definitely read much, much worse; there is just something that didn't come together for me in this installment.
