Howard Pyle had many admirers among his contemporaries, including Vincent Van Gogh, who once said that Pyle’s work “struck me dumb with admiration.” Considering the famous painter was talking about artwork, the extent of Pyle’s ability and quality was clear. �In addition to teaching illustration courses at Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry, Pyle put his talents to use, primarily illustrating children’s books. He is best remembered today for his work on The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which remains in print, and he also did a four-volume set of King Arthur tales. Though he also wrote his own novels, he continued to be in popular demand for illustrations, and he was employed by periodicals like Harper’s Weekly.

About the Author
Howard Pyle was a successful American author and illustrator, many of whose books are aimed at younger readers. After only a few formal lessons in artistic techniques, Pyle initially began his career creating illustrations for magazines, finally publishing his first work in Harper s Weekly at the age of twenty-five. Pyle s career took off, and he was soon creating his own stories and publishing illustrated books for children. His most famous work is The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which was the first cohesive retelling of the medieval legend of Robin Hood. His other famous works include Men of Iron, a tale about knighthood, and a four-volume collection about King Arthur. Howard Pyle died in Florence in 1911 at the age of fifty-eight.

Yes, this is a pirate, adventure, romance book. It's pretty good!

I don't know what about Howard Pyle's writing appeals to me. Maybe it's the impressive grammar, the stunningly correct use of language he uses to paint a picture that jumps into my conscience and becomes a grand movie in my mind. Or the twists and turns, the unpredictability of the tale, the endlessly wicked rogues, the palpable atmosphere...who knows? I just enjoy his stories very much, and in fact I sometimes read them more than once! This is most rare for me, because there is so much to read, and so little time...
Anyway, this one is a keeper.
The story is memorable, unfolds with much drama and many thrills...just read it.
