In A Cold War in the Soviet Bloc, Sheldon Anderson uses recently declassified documents from Polish and East German communist party and foreign ministry archives to examine the interplay of national interests with the exigencies of communist party relations within the Soviet bloc during the Cold War. Anderson explores how Polish-East German relations were strained over the permanence of the Oder-Neisse border, the correct road to socialism, German repatriation from Poland, and trade policy; he provides an inside account of the heated debates that seriously divided the Polish and East German communists.Anderson delves into how and why the rift culminated in the return of the anti-Stalinist Wladyslaw Gomulka in October 1956, and he delineates how the Polish-East German conflict undermined the unity of the Soviet bloc on its most strategic flank. In doing so, he reveals the persistence of nationalism and ethnic prejudice in the former communist countries. In this timely text, Anderson pinpoints how nationalism has reemerged as a powerful political force following the end of the Cold War. With A Cold War in the Soviet Bloc, Anderson markedly fills the gap in the existing scholarship on postwar relations between the countries of East Europe.

Nationalism - the final stage of socialism
By R. L. Huff
At least in eastern Europe. A very thorough outline of a little-known controversy in postwar Europe. The "communist bloc" was more myth than monolith, even at the time this bogey was most aggressively peddled. And with few outlets to express dissent toward the Elder Brother in the East, each side could vent its steam toward the other as surrogate.
Sheldon Anderson's monograph shows the legacy of nationalism being skilfully played by old antagonists, within the context of their mutual relationship with the USSR. Both Poland and eastern Germany were victims, in their own ways, of WW II; while it's hard not to feel sympathy with either side at some point, they each had a history of aggressive nationalism in their own right making sides hard to choose.
Of the two, the GDR was clearly at a disadvantage, as a rump state made to bear the blame (and reparations) for all Germans, while the Poles could continue trading on their prewar diplomacy. Poland, in fact, used the GDR as a foil to build new relations with postwar West Germany and Europe, thereby gaining relative independence from Moscow. This explains in large measure why a united Germany, after 1990, would "forgive" the Polish acquisitions of former Reich territory.
East Germany was further hampered by SED leader Ulricht's negative attitude to nationalism. This cut deeper than his appointment as Stalin's viceroy, harking back to his own experiences in WW I and the rise of Nazism. His emphasis on socialism and Marxism-Leninsm as the pillars of a distinct GDR identity left the state he founded at a great disadvantage between West Germany and Poland, who were free to pursue their national identities. When the Berlin Wall went up as a symbol of the GDR's ideological purity its ultimate failure was only a matter of time. Yet East Berlin's critique of Gomulka was also spot on: encouraging patriotism and workers' protests was his undoing, and finally of the socialism he served. Both "people's democracies" never found a way to overcome differences between or within themselves.

A useful book

An excellent book: clearly written, packed with information, and unbiased so far as I can see. German-Polish relations have shaped much of modern European history, and the author shows that in spite of communist controls, old attitudes played the first fiddle in the relations between the two countries.
